<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Yesterday I went out to Newham to deliver some pieces to The New Ashgate Gallery for their next display. There will be another lovely mix of makers starting today! I made a new series of mugs for them.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The gallery is in the town which has strong connection with crafts and hosts annual craft festivals. Therefore despite being a small town there are quite a few places to see. Although, this was my first visit. So after the gallery, I visited to Crafts Study Centre to see the exhibition of Ladi Kwali who worked with Michael Cardew in 60s. There are some water pots that have her iconic shapes and motifs and some other shapes that I could see the exchange of skills and cultures. It made me think more of my next research trip in Japan!</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #0c343d; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: x-small;">Momosan shop, picture taken by Moritz Steiger</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Phew... last week I had the last firing of this year. All the rest of Christmas orders was in it and I was very nervous if anything goes wrong. Surprisingly the result was one of the most successful ones and I was so relieved. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So this week I was running around to deliver and send them off. Also finally after 3 months of intensive making I managed to get out of the studio in Hackney and saw some nice things!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">graphicsrca: fifty years. It's showing the work of their graphic design graduates since they set up the course. Some people might spot famous designers now but I couldn't tell anybody but a few friends... Instead, I found a few pieces I loved, which was one of the typography experiments. It really made me want to do more experiment in my work! The exhibition finishes soon so please don't miss it.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">And Julio Le Parc at Serpentine Sackler gallery. His work might not be strikingly new nor complex but it's very enjoyable. Basically it's kinetic work using light, so movement, reflection and sound materials make is the big part of the work. For me the methodical drawings at the back was very inspiring. I should go back to drawings!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">And, still (since summer) a part of the shop attached to the gallery is <a href="http://www.momosanshop.com/">Momosan shop</a> who recently moved her base from Kingsland road to our neighbourhood. The new Momosan shop is in Wilton Way and looks even greater with more exciting stuff. I love hearing her story where she's found these beautiful objects.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In the same street there is another beautiful shop <a href="http://jglinert.com/">J.Glinert</a>, and farther down <a href="http://www.violetcakes.com/">Violet</a>: the cake shop. The street has become a lot prettier. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Hope you're enjoying Chritsmas shopping rather than being stressed out!</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">On a beautiful sunny day yesterday, I popped out the studio for a few hours to see the Harvest Festival.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It seems you enjoy creating all sorts of awards in everything. Especially I love this kind of sweet competitions. I love seeing the effort that goes in any small things and the critical eyes that appreciate and praise it.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">One day I would like to visit one of the fields of those huge pumpkins!</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Thank you so much to those who came to see me at Ceramics in the City. It was a great weekend for me, seeing a lovely audience who is knowledgeable and appreciates what we do and spending a weekend in the lovely venue.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Also I felt so honoured to be among the talented makers and had a good chance to speak with them. I learnt so much about their practice and ceramic terms.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I swapped work with a few of other exhibitors as a remembrance, and o</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">ne of these was </span><a href="http://www.hannahmcandrew.co.uk/" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Hannah McAndrew</a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> who makes beautiful English slipware. Something about her work made me feel home, and I fell in love with a particular one that had a simpler slip decoration. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The great thing about having a good pottery is to make you think what to cook and how to use it. Since I got this I've been thinking all sorts of dishes. Yesterday finally I spent some good amount of time in the kitchen cooking and enjoyed the dish. It's one of the happiest moments. Thank you, Hannah.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
</span><br />
</span><br />
イギリスのスリップウェアは日本の食卓にも取り込みやすいので、是非!</span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09600019098723367755noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4410616656566879014.post-87938044502434943082014-09-17T09:00:00.003+01:002014-12-13T13:33:00.779+00:00Another Ceramics in the City - Design Festival 14<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Yesterday I went to see one of the design districts, Shoreditch Design Triangle. This year it looks even more interesting with many more shops/galleries opening their doors. </span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">SCP, one of my favourite shops. They were showing some new collections. One of these is Mashiko pottery that has come to London a few times now. This time in this shop they seem to have different shapes, maybe more suitable for food style here.</span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKpZjVgiFux8hxvC5A2TpfwGAaUvC4bERwOdMODvz2MmhYJcHH77k_8CdylQysHWXm-GMe9fyzQ4dxlxtOoYnBgZjPNCo8gI4lnk5mo4-uYQ1DqeP-epimILt1-RjYJw2X5w_lGz88M5qL/s1600/c6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKpZjVgiFux8hxvC5A2TpfwGAaUvC4bERwOdMODvz2MmhYJcHH77k_8CdylQysHWXm-GMe9fyzQ4dxlxtOoYnBgZjPNCo8gI4lnk5mo4-uYQ1DqeP-epimILt1-RjYJw2X5w_lGz88M5qL/s1600/c6.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">n the same shop another collection by a very talented designer Reiko Kaneko who's now based in Stoke-On-Trent. VERY beautiful terracotta tableware with a careful attention to details, earthy but modern. Although, personally I have a problem with unglazed surface for functional ware when it's low-fired. It's more porous and hard to keep it clean hygienically and cosmetically.</span></div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUjHlHQQYJiWckD83K43OT9GOrkpnoRQo4Mh2naH4DKeQB9dddo6-79-UPOsji7YyHBvvmNEb-SZSTxdsNbLD_XJVCSrR-ketlGM2lE_xoPDssOw1MLIQKCF0L80MsrZEtmDczdNXFAjHg/s1600/c3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUjHlHQQYJiWckD83K43OT9GOrkpnoRQo4Mh2naH4DKeQB9dddo6-79-UPOsji7YyHBvvmNEb-SZSTxdsNbLD_XJVCSrR-ketlGM2lE_xoPDssOw1MLIQKCF0L80MsrZEtmDczdNXFAjHg/s1600/c3.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This is very jolly collection of vases by Bethan Laura Wood Alter, Max Lamb, Martino Gamper and somebody (! Sorry I couldn't remember his/her name, but makes beautiful milkshake glaze! I will edit here as soon as I find out his name!) at Ace Hotel. I loved how they're displayed with flowers and, really, their playfulness as one and as a group. </span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1Po3H6HDZdU89uwAD2WIIF5uEiqJxTYhoBwQPwKTMOZ6uxiZug9knCm70gFqCmxcRH-EDIPpAaa1wZ57jpqoFt6tXdOS89HN4pRea2tvgm7Ks_FR-XixVW-MN2OCGrUGOa1kVFZN473bW/s1600/c2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1Po3H6HDZdU89uwAD2WIIF5uEiqJxTYhoBwQPwKTMOZ6uxiZug9knCm70gFqCmxcRH-EDIPpAaa1wZ57jpqoFt6tXdOS89HN4pRea2tvgm7Ks_FR-XixVW-MN2OCGrUGOa1kVFZN473bW/s1600/c2.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">These plant pots are not just for the festival. They are in their bar. I just love the way they go so well with the plants and how they are hang.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUGVHYHxhVbYgusylDeK81xcV2HjfDyf7fWmLaNsU1YcIuegHIVgz2L5rEi_pb1BZcVqh6HbpCRN_E1tvswxUnACivpcFruS7D4RTaETWVf5mHXBB9SjcdlqXKK5YC8MV3HvgTRYEB_0GY/s1600/c6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUGVHYHxhVbYgusylDeK81xcV2HjfDyf7fWmLaNsU1YcIuegHIVgz2L5rEi_pb1BZcVqh6HbpCRN_E1tvswxUnACivpcFruS7D4RTaETWVf5mHXBB9SjcdlqXKK5YC8MV3HvgTRYEB_0GY/s1600/c6.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">And <a href="http://www.aesop.com/uk/potapota-at-shoreditch">Studio Potapota for Aesop</a>. The ceramics is made by a Japanese duo Hidekazu & Kaori Sogabe. Interesting...</span></div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4gtAoPv45nZEvgx6_fN0BNbGyUa_ubFzMcVf7-HzUe6-4g775GKzHwu-sQIZ6536ohnobR_LZTo2HhyF3ABgjJ7cahk5K6drgHQnyXDcTOPzZlLeuFc4V8hEYmorVMqRhH1S-HBUPyMZ-/s1600/c1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4gtAoPv45nZEvgx6_fN0BNbGyUa_ubFzMcVf7-HzUe6-4g775GKzHwu-sQIZ6536ohnobR_LZTo2HhyF3ABgjJ7cahk5K6drgHQnyXDcTOPzZlLeuFc4V8hEYmorVMqRhH1S-HBUPyMZ-/s1600/c1.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><a href="http://lunaandcurious.com/">Luna & Curious</a>. They transformed a part of their shop to a ceramic studio with a table to make your ceramics with an extruder to play with. If you like to try out some ceramic technique you better pop in there.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlVkxOQU0YRyJJdtZQM5fyrbZxYK6nXU31CUBPIAi1-1tHUAwIA9XjtYpwTD8drlGgWTnYZ7hbfvKOtRb-lHkPVvWALOyTRlvHt2AoOtpIjFi634c8s7dYAhNzLTuXtpIK-gJKwmHilsys/s1600/c4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlVkxOQU0YRyJJdtZQM5fyrbZxYK6nXU31CUBPIAi1-1tHUAwIA9XjtYpwTD8drlGgWTnYZ7hbfvKOtRb-lHkPVvWALOyTRlvHt2AoOtpIjFi634c8s7dYAhNzLTuXtpIK-gJKwmHilsys/s1600/c4.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In another favourite shop: <a href="http://choosingkeeping.com/">Choosing Keeping</a> is the show of two artists. The ceramic work is by Morgan Peck. Another artist is David Bachelor. The collection that is quiet but fun goes so well with the stationery Julia has chosen from all over the world. It's such a beautiful space! Please don't miss this!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As you can see, you have a VERY GOOD reason to come to East this weekend. Please don't miss Ceramics in the City at Geffrye Museum. Open Fri - Sun 10am-5pm. Late Event is on Thu 6pm - 8:30pm! See you there!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span id="goog_1689006742"></span><span id="goog_1689006743"></span>On Saturday when I was working in the studio my studio mate popped in and reminded me that Design Festival had started. Oh no! I had almost none information what's happening where apart from the major shows. As this is the most exciting time of the year I get to see a lot of nice things in the city, I don't want to miss them just because I'm preparing for my show. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So V&A. I loved the <a href="http://www.londondesignfestival.com/events/wish-list">Wish List</a>. It's a collection of objects that 10 design specialists commissioned 10 craftsmen/designers to make the one-off pieces that they dreamt of having. It's so sweet because it shows their personalities and the stories in their making. It's just simply a VERY lovely project. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">And the Open Studio of their resident ceramicist Nao Matsuyama. It's always nice to see the artists' working studios, to see the tiny bits of experiments and their drawings, pieces of their inspiration. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWWx8V7u3P9vcQA_F8vgNDuOMlkOTL99y4pa3GkjiXTzzw4pbBIXce0077hNhDCHEt-S5CkEQFQFF620eT3LQjMiMM-p4Ugy-kT1UhTGPqYam6AJlrseTj4OLFmx2Wpi1XUEgDoM8BfKrH/s1600/nao.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWWx8V7u3P9vcQA_F8vgNDuOMlkOTL99y4pa3GkjiXTzzw4pbBIXce0077hNhDCHEt-S5CkEQFQFF620eT3LQjMiMM-p4Ugy-kT1UhTGPqYam6AJlrseTj4OLFmx2Wpi1XUEgDoM8BfKrH/s1600/nao.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Also another exhibition in the museum: <a href="http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/exhibitions/disobedient-objects/">Disobedient Object</a>. The objects that were used in protests and that were made/chosen to protest something. It's interesting when a shape or a foam becomes to symbolise something, even more when the message is strong. The show was compact but it made me think A LOT.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I also headed down to Ealing to see <a href="http://www.londondesignfestival.com/events/crafting-narrative-storytelling-through-objects-and-making">Crafting Narrative</a>. The show has a group of objects that their designers/makers try to tell their story through. It took me a while to understand some of the stories, but it was interesting to see different approaches they took. I also loved their playful display.</span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh0FR1KXvJw93R06x2uVzx3O2f5jMaMMPkCNQc7oqZIjJHIiwo0y8G4ww82KldO4vAsJAO1N-LmMIzxr2RPXdigf-a-BH8aaai_znqtMQSHRNAHZVz4XCbOUPhezjbf4JarjcWWJKcLBin/s1600/df+cc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh0FR1KXvJw93R06x2uVzx3O2f5jMaMMPkCNQc7oqZIjJHIiwo0y8G4ww82KldO4vAsJAO1N-LmMIzxr2RPXdigf-a-BH8aaai_znqtMQSHRNAHZVz4XCbOUPhezjbf4JarjcWWJKcLBin/s1600/df+cc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh0FR1KXvJw93R06x2uVzx3O2f5jMaMMPkCNQc7oqZIjJHIiwo0y8G4ww82KldO4vAsJAO1N-LmMIzxr2RPXdigf-a-BH8aaai_znqtMQSHRNAHZVz4XCbOUPhezjbf4JarjcWWJKcLBin/s1600/df+cc.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">And a pop-up shop <a href="http://www.londondesignfestival.com/events/hay-mini-market-selfridges">Hay Mini Market</a>. I adore their beautiful glazes on the pots and cones. Seeing nice glazes always makes me want to explore more in my work too. I also loved their stationery: wooden rulers, towers of memo pads and notebooks. The only concern is that they are just too good to have in my muddy studio!</span></div>

</div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Now it's 10 days to go before Ceramics in The City. I'm just doing the last firings...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The new series I've been making for the upcoming shows (also for Made London) is called Mishima style (Mishima-de) in Japan. The technique applied is called inlaying here. We use different clay from the body clay (that we make pots with) in another colour to fill the incised marks. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The style originally came from Korea of Koryo period, Buncheong pottery, to Japan.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We named it Mishima-de as its fine patterns looked like <a href="http://www.city.mishima.shizuoka.jp/ipn000109.html">Mishima calender: one of our old ones</a>. (the link is in Japanese, but it's got a picture of the calender.) It often implies floral and animal motifs.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This time I wanted to make it a bit more British with something that we see in a big group here... Would you like to know what it is? Please come to <a href="http://www.geffrye-museum.org.uk/whatson/future/">Ceramics in the City at Geffrye museum</a>!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The pictures are showing two stages of the making process: after incising with patterns and when getting rid of excess clay after inlaying.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I tried this cuke for the first time. It's one of the things I started noticing recently. This year they seem to be everywhere, so I gave it a go! Simple salad with kohlrabi, just sliced vegs with olive oil, lemon and wine vinegar. </span><br />
<br />
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09600019098723367755noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4410616656566879014.post-43440327052875818622014-08-01T21:32:00.000+01:002014-08-06T08:42:24.664+01:00what tomatoes tell about your local?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Made it again... Simple <a href="http://mizuyo.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/carpaccio-de-tomates.html">tomato carpaccio.</a> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The recipe hasn't changed at all. What changed was where I got these heirloom tomatoes... surprisingly in Hackney! I used to go to Borough or Maltby just to get these tomatoes but I now know at least 2 shops that stock them in my neighbourhood.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Hackney's been really changing! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
</span><br />
</span><br />
</span><br />
</span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09600019098723367755noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4410616656566879014.post-54033136855967295122014-07-24T19:37:00.002+01:002014-07-24T19:37:44.683+01:00sakura mochi project -2<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This weekend I spent some time to make one of the ingredients for sakura mochi. I cooked sweet rice and dried it for a few days until it became hard like stone, and then ground it to smaller grains using a food processor.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This is what we call 'doumyouji ko' and use for the skin of the sweet, outside adzuki paste. Although, this is West Japan style. In East Japan they use flour instead of this. There seems to be a variety in names and styles depending on the area.</span></div>

</span><br />
</span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09600019098723367755noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4410616656566879014.post-1790725666309533072014-07-14T09:09:00.000+01:002016-05-18T08:10:56.357+01:00wild plum<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYJ1e4AJJPncgD84i7yGMd06TWdQRvSmiqO0G-WV3LflGwXruwltoDXGuN7wrzXlN4BI7P1-qkeSndmp5DRI-tLJoGLxhEjx9puJiJOjunjzwayl31xE74TRcxJh1WfW6biwV9p_gm8skO/s1600/damson1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYJ1e4AJJPncgD84i7yGMd06TWdQRvSmiqO0G-WV3LflGwXruwltoDXGuN7wrzXlN4BI7P1-qkeSndmp5DRI-tLJoGLxhEjx9puJiJOjunjzwayl31xE74TRcxJh1WfW6biwV9p_gm8skO/s1600/damson1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The other day we picked up some plums in our neighbourhood. There are a few kinds of the wild plum in a park and the fruits have started turning their colour already. In half an hour we each got about 3kg of plums, which is A LOT! </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">With the ones that are not quite ripe I made Japanese plum wine with English twists. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">In the same way you make damson gin, we make plum wine using other kinds of plum and liquor. Actually the plum we use is more like apricot, it's got a thicker and hairy skin. We use it when it's green and hard. We prick it to make the exchange of flavour and liquid easier, and that is a children's task on a day in the rainy season, June. The liquor I chose this time was white rum just for its subtle flavour comparing to the others. I will let you know what it tastes like a few months later.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">With medium-ripe plums I made chutney. It was a very time-consuming process, but I enjoyed it. Despite the fact the whole house smelled vinegar for a few days, it was worth trying even just to appreciate the ones in the markets. I gave some to my friends but still have a lot. It will last for a while even for me who is a big fan of chutney and chedder/stilton sandwiches!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSLU9vpAhqtYAeYM20fVCb0j1mXmp1gbICpzWhomwGGT8IaTArxj7Bx-V5y_m_mjQJAMKmzk1LfDJlBOgvbskvgfiwzrOfy_bJo9DWOLDNLZXJaHiKM0kPUp_-DsUbKTuw2wP4Trd6gw9r/s1600/damson2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSLU9vpAhqtYAeYM20fVCb0j1mXmp1gbICpzWhomwGGT8IaTArxj7Bx-V5y_m_mjQJAMKmzk1LfDJlBOgvbskvgfiwzrOfy_bJo9DWOLDNLZXJaHiKM0kPUp_-DsUbKTuw2wP4Trd6gw9r/s1600/damson2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
</span><br />
</span><br />
</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It's been such a long time since I last blogged...! The reason I stopped doing it was for me to have more time to think through. The blog is bit too short to go to the depth I wanted to explore, but my friends the other day told me that they were enjoying my blog... So I decided to come back and talk about the tiny little things around me. OK..., what's new?</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The very new thing for me is Kombucha. I got 'mother' from my friend more than a month ago, and now I've got the second 'mother'. It's fermented tea with lots of bacteria good for you. (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kombucha">wikipedia</a>) </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">For me, what changed was my headache. I don't have it anymore so I feel much better. Also, I think I have a better stomach. I get hungry quicker than I used to... Apparently the amount of enzyme you can produce in a life time is limited, less as you age, so this is a quick and easy way to supplement.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Try it out </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">if you like this sort of things</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">, but carefully. Please always follow the instruction, there are plenty online.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I'm also brewing ginger beer for the summer!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
</span><br />
</span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09600019098723367755noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4410616656566879014.post-51610019886588568652014-04-16T08:31:00.000+01:002014-04-16T08:36:56.270+01:00sakura mochi project<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This weekend I spent some time trying to identify the three sakura trees.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Using Natural History Museum's website and some Japanese ones I think I know the two. The sakura in the last post is Fugenzo in Japanese, its botanical name is Cerasus x Iannesianna Carriere, 1872 'Alborosea'.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Another one is Kanzan or Sekiyama, Prunus Iannesiana Wils. cv. Sekiyama. (the picture below.)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDzNVZPBveubVQtWPQ7vJbc97GSJd78tEh2yJyIR2EjRe6243dd-v_SNNteQKwUlFNNbLli4YWnmYDgLQ_q8dCLmooeCkP6C7fIWtxJYO0vRKIoA2slF2hraA-XgX5hwql6Tzsm9lFi2K2/s1600/%E3%82%AB%E3%83%B3%E3%82%B5%E3%82%99%E3%83%B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDzNVZPBveubVQtWPQ7vJbc97GSJd78tEh2yJyIR2EjRe6243dd-v_SNNteQKwUlFNNbLli4YWnmYDgLQ_q8dCLmooeCkP6C7fIWtxJYO0vRKIoA2slF2hraA-XgX5hwql6Tzsm9lFi2K2/s1600/%E3%82%AB%E3%83%B3%E3%82%B5%E3%82%99%E3%83%B3.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The leaves of these sakuras are thicker than the other one, which is not so great to make sakura mochi.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The third one is still remaining mysterious to me and I'm working on it. Actually it's very similar to the kind that</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> we use for the salted leaves in Japan, but the shape of its leaves doesn't match with the description of the kind. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">However, the leaves I picked the other day are nicely thin and are producing really really lovely smell. I'm hoping this one works well in my project!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHn4fAdOnIDiSjTYTjfRwKg6RbFSIbQLWNPFyK-yc1yynbgXXQESVmJmyuajBogPU3tVghCwTLdLV8CJthchyphenhyphenuvBjbXbG6jW-WDdxw_29A0DCOR2NonukPFa6tj2KkmJ_LeFCG4A8xnZB7/s1600/oos.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHn4fAdOnIDiSjTYTjfRwKg6RbFSIbQLWNPFyK-yc1yynbgXXQESVmJmyuajBogPU3tVghCwTLdLV8CJthchyphenhyphenuvBjbXbG6jW-WDdxw_29A0DCOR2NonukPFa6tj2KkmJ_LeFCG4A8xnZB7/s1600/oos.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The tree looks like this. If you know this species, please let me know!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5tJRjpVkj0Szu-Z5tUO2_wDaNHaX_U8mdToayb-vOOd1lLg_d8y-k15pbccmk0vA0BX73tEc6obUZxGu-nW59yLZiw_eeoAOU7Mt3K4kCixWow35xwKFx9nK2Mh6q4PSNVBd5hGxT1cgs/s1600/sakura.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5tJRjpVkj0Szu-Z5tUO2_wDaNHaX_U8mdToayb-vOOd1lLg_d8y-k15pbccmk0vA0BX73tEc6obUZxGu-nW59yLZiw_eeoAOU7Mt3K4kCixWow35xwKFx9nK2Mh6q4PSNVBd5hGxT1cgs/s1600/sakura.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Sakura season has finished in Japan. It's the most beautiful season that all the tree comes into bloom and all the flowers go at once. I wonder what it was like this year as they had a storm in the middle of the season.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I've been also enjoying the sakura blossoms in London but that's not the only reason I've been staring at them. It's for this project: making salted sakura leaves. It's been in my head for 2 years since then: my post about <a href="http://mizuyo.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/sakura-mochi.html">sakura mochi</a>.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFDXlVLs_6_p6-UHKs23gPmbRz9pVi8gvJs6N8-HMEyrOvXWaDovRC_I8JGFGNOhHJyKN9FnNmeXKuIWWkPhEQg5HZ92SSFt7S6Q5aaiouEVLKYGjB_1fuSiQ8czD51Ht0dKw6o4sTU_e5/s1600/sakura2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFDXlVLs_6_p6-UHKs23gPmbRz9pVi8gvJs6N8-HMEyrOvXWaDovRC_I8JGFGNOhHJyKN9FnNmeXKuIWWkPhEQg5HZ92SSFt7S6Q5aaiouEVLKYGjB_1fuSiQ8czD51Ht0dKw6o4sTU_e5/s1600/sakura2.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I found there are 3 majour variations in London, although I don't know their botanical names nor common names. I will try all of them this time and see if there's any difference. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The process is: washing and pickling (?) in salt water. The leaves produced beautiful scent when I poured hot water on them. It's the smell of spring!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF8snubjfDjkHT3lJ_t2VloIBvTP8M-OzdDbK5ozF0Zq-btVGA8rocU9TPmGKHBbrtZrFG99YDayP_FPGdGCJwkYRJCAZB_q-YR6ukIclVv2q_KX4Wzcirq0jWeeMAHLx69YDI4mSZixOA/s1600/sakura3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF8snubjfDjkHT3lJ_t2VloIBvTP8M-OzdDbK5ozF0Zq-btVGA8rocU9TPmGKHBbrtZrFG99YDayP_FPGdGCJwkYRJCAZB_q-YR6ukIclVv2q_KX4Wzcirq0jWeeMAHLx69YDI4mSZixOA/s1600/sakura3.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">そして、今日は、<a href="http://mizuyo.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/sakura-mochi.html">この頃</a>からずっと頭の中にあったプロジェクトを実行。 </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
桜餅made in London、どうなる!?</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We use liquid clay called 'slip'. There are some variations of it, we adjust the recipe, consistency and colour depending on the use of it. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Kohiki style has a layer of white slip under the glaze. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The main ingredient for my slip is very fine clay called China clay. I dipped my thrown piece in one go to put layer inside and outside, but this has been causing another trouble. I assume, in my case anyway, when this fine clay seals all the surface the air gets trapped in the clay body. Although, the air needs to escape somewhere and caused bubble in the body. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I acknowledged this last year but after a rather long Christmas holiday I totally forgot about it... </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">At the same time I had changed the slip recipe hoping to improve the fit with the glaze, but it caused funny reaction instead. I haven't found out yet why this happened, but I had to return to the old recipe.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">After all these shifts and adjustments, in the very last minute for the pop-up shop in Serpentine gallery, I got the best firing result so far. I hope you can imagine how happy I was after so many firings of such a low success rate! </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Anyway, the pop-up shop conjunct with <a href="http://www.serpentinegalleries.org/exhibitions-events/martino-gamper-design-state-mind">Martino Gamper's 'Design is a state of mind'</a> is another <a href="http://momosanshop.com/">Momosan</a> shop. She has been giving me critical and very open opinions, which has been helping me to challenge something new. Thank you so so much!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I hope you can make it to the shop, also, of course, to the charming exhibition! There are so much personal and fun things in there!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Finally! It looks like it's all OK?</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The furrow in snow series has been a real struggle... (just because I lack scientific understanding of the materials!)</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">First of all I mix clay and use Terracotta: low-firing red clay, in it. The maximum temperature for the clay is 1180 but I usually fire to 1260 with other clays that I've been using. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">All my glazes are designed for this temperature, but if I go this high this mixed clay body starts bubbling.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So I had to drop the temperature a little bit to avoid this problem, which brought another problem: the glaze doesn't mature. All the glaze has a temperature that needs to be reached. The glaze consists of three elements: glassy material to cover the surface and body material so that glaze fit on the clay body and 'flux' to melt these materials. By combining the three elements (from lots of raw materials!) we make a glaze to get a desired surface.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Mine for this series is supposed to be a very simple one: transparent glaze (but there are so many '</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">transparent</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">' surface and I didn't want shiny one or runny one. I wanted warm one that goes a bit opaque where it's thicker.)</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Anyway, back to the story, to mature the glaze at a lower temperature I had to alter the recipe. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Altering the recipe in ceramics is not as easy as doing it in cooking. I always wonder if there's any 'super mad ceramicist' who can tell from the recipe how the glaze behaves and looks without making it. I think there are many who can roughly guess what might happen, but I don't think anybody can tell exactly. (Anyway that's the fun part of ceramics.)</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Anyway as I can't 'calculate' glaze I just mixed some combinations. I got a good recipe but at the same time got another problem. It's because the new series has got a layer of slip between the clay and the glaze.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: right;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">(...continues.)</span></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
</span><br />
</span><br />
</span><br />
</span><br />
<div style="text-align: right;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">(時間がないので、次回に続く。)</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Yesterday I went to <a href="http://www.dajf.org.uk/event/kintsugi-the-art-of-broken-pieces">an event to learn more about kintsugi</a>. Kintsugi is a way to mend a broken piece, often ceramics. The technique was invented in Japan coincidental with tea ceremony. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It was fascinating to see the event attracted so many people who are keen to know about it. I enjoyed the short but very intriguing lecture by Timon Screech who referred to our perception of life and death and that of Europeans. He also mentioned to Roju (one of the Elders in Edo period) who viewed two cities of the capital, old one Kyoto and the new one Edo (former Tokyo) that were very different in their character and people's mentality. It made me want to know more about that period too.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In a group there was a demonstration by a craftman Makie-shi (gold lacquer painter) . He was, surprisingly to me, a good English speaker and very funny. There will be demonstration of this superb technique at <a href="http://tokyobikeuk.tumblr.com/post/70310005976/kintsugi-six-centuries-of-ceramic">Tokyobike</a> on Sat. Please don't miss it!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This is a part of London I hardly go... Brixton. It's just such a notorious area for gangs and crimes, but I'd wanted to see Brixton village where you can hang out for nice food, coffees and some vintage shops.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I was surprised to find the market is quite big and very buzzy. There are so many choices of what you can have for lunch: burgers, grills, pizza, curry, Thai, Japanese, Pakistani, French, Portoguese etc ... and, of course, Carribean! It seems they serve nice food everywhere and people were queueing up some places. It's good that you can see what they serve by checking what others are having at outside table before taking your seats.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We tried Portoguese grill with Piri piri sauce... Yum! and the bill for two (without drinks) was well under £20! </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We got latte from Federation coffee after lunch. Very nice!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghTUd500tFMB5DaPfMzi5KXp4w0rqWehBHwUFA9Axs1oT0-fkyOxq6MNzvBFWZS_TEXJBcfDK3pqZ9HALepzJPs4wUo91YG8AUdH6X8WOtBkGTSKgyulsbFCsuN-HDOqyI7LoZTtY_8z5O/s1600/piripiri.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghTUd500tFMB5DaPfMzi5KXp4w0rqWehBHwUFA9Axs1oT0-fkyOxq6MNzvBFWZS_TEXJBcfDK3pqZ9HALepzJPs4wUo91YG8AUdH6X8WOtBkGTSKgyulsbFCsuN-HDOqyI7LoZTtY_8z5O/s1600/piripiri.jpg" height="320" width="245" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHwy4404cm-uAm5ecYn8_i9y0rpLuG2inZBL_-Tv5aoFOS5K5m1laZLJBjUbJdpt1rHGnl56_DGunexKjyaSdIN3hCwUq7ufEkd80w6bk9gJPD-dgFf6289ODUo_VgfG6k1dSub7QhZXBc/s1600/hyde.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHwy4404cm-uAm5ecYn8_i9y0rpLuG2inZBL_-Tv5aoFOS5K5m1laZLJBjUbJdpt1rHGnl56_DGunexKjyaSdIN3hCwUq7ufEkd80w6bk9gJPD-dgFf6289ODUo_VgfG6k1dSub7QhZXBc/s1600/hyde.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So the new year has started. Do you have your new year's resolutions? It's funny that if I google 'new year resolution', one of the most common words that comes next is 'idea' and some websites are offering what you should be wishing to achieve. Maybe those who hasn't got willpower strong enough to refuse them might have to be wishing something they even didn't think of? I had my own one that was trying not to eat sweets much, which was already broken when Christmas sweets are on offer in supermarkets! I'll have to rethink of it already.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">What I did new in this year was dubbing for a film. It is a documentary about a particular subject in Japan and they interviewed some people. And they've lost a part of voice of a woman because of noisy background and another reason. And I had to speak lip sync with the woman whose lifestyle I wouldn't like and don't understand. (I've watched the rough cut of the film before.) </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">When I heard my voice as her after the recording I felt really weird. I felt as if she is me and that idea really disgusted me. Although I enjoyed this new experience it reminded me of another nasty experience some years ago as well. I'm hoping to digest this weird experience this year! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Happy New Year to all of you! Hope you had a lovely Christmas holiday.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Although I had a good time indoors in London I prefer spending this time of the year with my family and in Japan as we have annual customs: having a new years menu: otoso, osechi and ozoni, visiting shrines and receiving new year cards. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Without all of these it is hard to feel the new year has arrived. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The only thing I did Japanese way was to change omamori to a new one. Omamori is Japanese amulet we get from the shrines and temples we visit usually early in the year. When we make the first visit of the year to one (hatsumoude), we return the old omamori thanking for protecting us in the previous year and get a new one for the new year. I now have a bit of collection of old ones as I kept forgetting to take them back...</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The new one in yellow is what I got during the trip in Shikoku last year. Hope this will take care of me well. Hope it's gonna be a good year for all of you too!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This is the last piece of stollen already. I need another loaf!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We celebrate Christmas in Japan but it's not a National holiday. When I was little we would have our little relatives around at home and had a party. We would have Kentucky Fried Chicken and curry and log-shaped Christmas cake made with either ice cream (I used to love it!) or fresh cream. I would hang a stocking next to my bed, but it was just a very ordinary sock I would wear every day... What a shame...! </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It‘s not quite the same, I think, how they celebrate the day in Japan now as we used to do but is still pretty much in Japanese style I think.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I'm also finding the variations in Europe too. I have an Austrian friend with two kids. I joined their wreath making workshop the other day. I'm still working on it after 10 days...</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSnhlUCAmNjN0b9FezqImtDANScoFGTwZBtM1Sl2t-FFZtXfTwzIsHfkJd8FzcQQdbMmL2VbCqPAyDWi7fsuYK2m-GqpRoqvVDmyVED1LfjU_gutTe6WZDHXQ_ktIgaQJO0LoyCn6R_2H0/s1600/wreatg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSnhlUCAmNjN0b9FezqImtDANScoFGTwZBtM1Sl2t-FFZtXfTwzIsHfkJd8FzcQQdbMmL2VbCqPAyDWi7fsuYK2m-GqpRoqvVDmyVED1LfjU_gutTe6WZDHXQ_ktIgaQJO0LoyCn6R_2H0/s320/wreatg.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>

</span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This weekend in London a lot of artists'/artisans' studios are open. I visited a couple of places: 'made in Clerkenwell' at craft central & Goldsmith centre and Chocolate factory. It is always inspiring to see others' studios even though they are set up for display. I love finding bits and bobs they are experimenting.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #4c1130; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;">Love this beautiful desk space!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We usually have our open studio on the same weekends but this year it is on 13th Fri and 14th Sat December just because that's the weekend most of us can be at the studio. A good thing about changing the date is that I can go out to have a look at others' which I hardly could do in these years.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Don't you miss this opportunity if you're free today!</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><a href="http://akikohiraiceramics.com/">Akiko Hirai</a> at Chocolate Factory. Every time I see her her work is evolving. A very inspiring and hard-working ceramicist I admire.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It was a lovely surprise to find <a href="http://www.viclee.co.uk/Vic_Lee_Store_Home.html">Vic Lee</a>'s studio in clerkenwell. I love his prints of the streets in London. I've been always attempted to buy one of Columbia Road but now I found more appealing one: Broadway Market!!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The maker of fantastically surreal jewellery, <a href="http://www.momocreatura.com/">Momoko of momocreatura</a> was there in clerkenwell too! Her new pieces were cute and lovely but still have her style.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This is just a few picks of so many. This is why I love the city, there are so diverse and inspiring people everywhere...!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(でも、土地勘を養っておかないといろいろ回るのは大変かな??)</span></div>
