caterpillar

This is a caterpillar I found on the edge of the kitchen sink yesterday. I put it back on a leaf and when I woke up this morning it has eaten 5 leaves and a bit on its own! What a greedy caterpillar!! (like me!) I hope you eat a lot more. Whatever you're gonna be, your life will be a lot more fun when flying.

We used to have a kind of swallowtail every summer in a tree in our garden in Japan. And I used to observe them until they became butterflies, which was always my summer homework for school. Their caterpillar get as big as a finger and it was always lovely to see them in a variety of size crawling around. The tree doesn't exist any more but I hope they found a nice home.

昨日台所でいも虫を見つけて、隣にあった植物に載せてあげたのですが、今朝見てみるとその葉を５枚も食べていました。いも虫にも好き嫌いはあって、葉っぱならなんでも食べるというわけではないので、お気に召されたようで嬉しかったです。私の台所に来るとは、さすが食いしん坊！お目が高いですぞ！

私の昔の実家には毎年アゲハチョウの類いが卵を生んでいく木があって、祖父の書斎の窓のヘリに座って夏の課題のために観察日記をつけたものでした。ところが、一斉に孵化して同じように成長していくわけではないので、大きさにばらつきがあり、何十匹もいるなかであの子が育ったらこの位だろうという適当な推測をしながらのものでしかありませんでした。結構な厚みのある葉にも関わらず、もぐもぐ食べる姿は本当にかわいくて、毎年の楽しみでした。

この子は毛虫ではないので蝶のような気がしますが、どちらにしろちゃんと食べて立派に飛べるようになってくれたら嬉しいです。
