summer holiday 2012 -2

After leaving Burley and then Sway, we went down south to Lymington to get a ferry to the Isle of Wight. 

We took open air bus tour to Alum Bay and the Needles which is one of the touristic places on the island, then walked on coastal path to Freshwater. 

Again it was a really lovely walk. Maybe it was about an hour (or more) walk, looking down the beautiful chalk cliff which has diagonal black lines, walking through a group of bulls and feeling the breeze from the sea.   

The next day we started from Shanklin which is on the south west coast of the island. We walked to the next town Sandown along the shore. I really love those little huts on the beaches here. They are really pretty.

Taking a few buses we went to Arreton which is a small old village to buy some souvenirs and to Osbourne house which used to be Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's country family house. The house was filled with fine artefacts they loved and has a private beach where we could spend a whole day. Unfortunately we were running out of time and had to head off to Ryde to get a ferry back to the main island. 

Burleyから、交通と宿の都合上、ChristchurchとSwayに寄り、海沿いの町、Lymingtonを経てワイト島に渡りました。島は意外と大きく、私たちはまず北西にあるYarmouthという港に着き、そこから観光スポットの一つである、Alum Bayとthe Needlesという要塞のあった島の最西端に行きました。

それから崖沿いの小道を東に向かってまた歩きました。途中、海抜150mほどの高さの丘を登り、牛の大群の間を通り、小石でできた海岸Freshwater beachに辿り着きました。そこで一休みし、さて帰ろうと思った午後6時手前の辺りで、あてにしていたバスの最終便を逃していた事に気付きました。慌てて、近くのバス停まで歩き（半時間程）、その日の宿、Shanklinに辿り着きました。途中の景色もまたかわいかったのですが、ロンドンでもバス酔いしてしまう私、田舎の曲がりくねった道を飛ばされたので、あまり楽しめませんでした。

最終日はShanklinから隣町のSandownまで海岸沿いを1時間弱歩き、バスに乗って、Arretonという小さな村とOsbourne houseを見てきました。

Osbourne houseは昔、ロイヤルファミリーの家だったところで、ビクトリア時代の工芸が盛んだった様子を内装から調度品からしっかりと感じられる場所です。夏の間にはビーチも開放されていて、そこではイギリスの海辺の定番、Punch and Judyのパペットショーをしていました。ゆったりと過ごせたら良かったのですが、私たちには帰りの時間もあり、Rydeから本島へのフェリーに乗るべく、帰途につきました。
