syodai pottery

I'm now in Kyusyu and visiting more pottery places.
The first was Syodai pottey in Kumamoto. They use terracotta-like clay and put base glaze and then white glaze on top. Their significance in the appearance is this two layers of glazes. It can be double-dipped or lines as decoration. Subtle difference in the temperature and all the happenings in the firing give such different feel to each pots. The pottery studio we visited in a mountain had a few other styles as well as this traditional shodai style. They were beautifully made and attempting but I had to give up getting one as I have a long week ahead!

今回の日本滞在の一つの楽しみは、九州〜四国の旅をすることでした。この１週間、窯元をいくつか訪ねに行きます。

まずは熊本、小代焼。熊本の北の荒尾という市の小高い竹山の中に数件の窯元があります。小代焼の特徴は2種類の釉薬を重ねがけすることで、透明釉と白い釉薬の微妙な厚みの違いが、いろいろな表情を作ります。数件ある窯の中でも大きいのがふもと窯で、典型的な小代焼のものから、泥漿で模様を施したスリップウェアのものもあり、積極的に試みている様子が伺えました。お店の奥にある工房も覗かせて頂き、職人さんの手の滑らかさと早さに、ただただため息が出ました。
