british ceramics biennial

Yesterday I made a journey up to Stoke-on-trent to see BCB.
They are having a big exhibition of ceramics of today in the old Spode factory converted into a gallery space. 
They've got such lovely works and their each approach to the materials, ideas and forms so diverse, I enjoyed it so much.
The city is full of history with grand lovely buildings and bottle kilns, ceramics workshops running over the weekends. It's definitely worth paying a visit especially when BCB is on (till 10th Nov). 
(And please don't forget to have Staffordshire oatcakes!)

昨日はストークオントレントに行ってきた。陶石と石炭がとれたという地理的利点から、陶器産業が発達してウェッジウッド、ロイヤルドルトン、スポードなどというイギリスを代表するメーカーがこの地域を拠点とした。
80年代の不景気と、近年生産が中国の工場に行ってしまったことから、産業は小さくなってしまったけれども、最盛期の面影を大きな建物やところどころに点在するボトルキルンに見ることができる。
今回は陶芸のビエンナーレを見にきた。同じ材料を使いながら、作家さんのアプローチが違って、すごく楽しかった。また人も優しく、バスで隣り合わせた人々もいろいろ話してくれるので、イギリスの地方に来たなーという感じがする。
ロンドンから1時間半、陶器好きには、ぜひ訪れて欲しい街。
