festival des métiers

Another thing I went out to see was the exhibition of craftwork at Hermès. It is always encouraging to see artisan doing great work. The show was being held in two rooms on the first floor of Saatchi gallery. They were showing hand craft in the production of scarf, knit, bag, watch, jewels, tie and china painting. You would understand their price maybe if you've seen their work at a high standard but what I loved most was their love towards the tools also in a very high standard.
(Picture above) A part of some scarves is textured by chopping yarn in the top layer.
Apparently it takes between a few days to a week to finish this process of one depending on the design. All the processes before this in scarf production is also labour-intensive.
Do you see the tailored crocodile leather handles on these tools..? And the bit at the end of the scale? So beautiful.
Another very beautiful thing, a crocodile cover.
We in Japan also use bamboo mats to keep brushes in order but without the pockets like this. This is really sweet. These things really make me feel like organising my studio space better. It will definitely change the mood in making!
Very intricate work in watch making. You can't even see small parts in the picture.
The artisans showed and explained us their great skill, and answered our questions openly. I loved it because I could see their passion and pride in their skill of making. Isn't it obvious that craft is definitely vital to their creativity? (Please click this to see what the UK government thinks of it?)

confiture de lait

This is my quick breakfast. I have a few slices of bread and a lot of tea.
When I was in Paris, I wanted to buy 'Confiture de lait' which is milk caramel. I saw it in a supermarket near Luxembourg garden but didn't want to carry it for the rest of the day. Then I couldn't find it anywhere else after that. So this time I had to give up to bring one back... I was little disappointed as it is a must for me.
Then this weekend when I was with friends and popped into a French cafe in Newington Green, I found it!! I was so happy. So this is my happy breakfast.

une japonaise à paris

I came back in London. It was a refreshing holiday.
I studied French for 2 years in university in Japan but don't remember much now... So in Paris I just used a few basic expressions, smiles and "Parlez-vous Anglais?" and the life was smooth there...
But I'll note a misunderstanding I experienced. Once I ordered a cake and latte in a pattiserier. I should have realised that 'latte' is Italian and they call it 'cafe au lait'. Anyway I said "cafe latte, s'il vous plait" and the girl didn't hear me well. So I just said "boisson... latte" and the girl kindly brought and showed me 4 packages of different tea bags. I was thinking "OK! it's tea..." but didn't know how to correct the situation. Anyway I am tea person so I was happy to choose Earl Grey. (but without milk!)
Then I realised she maybe misheard me saying 'le the' (tea) not 'latte'. well...
Another thing to remember was (it wasn't really misunderstanding) that they tend to forget to pronounce 'h' in English too.

old match boxes... mignon!
the shop glass windows... super!
A garçon talking with a woman in the stand opposite to his work place.
I saw dogs and their poo everywhere...
They like keeping the dates when the pavement is done.

musee du quai Branly

We went to musee du quai Branly. It has fantastic collection and the building itself is quite interesting, makes you feel like exploring.

le corbusier kitchen

Today was my father's anniversary. So I went to Villa Savoye to console his spirit who has been my guardian angel.
He was a big fun of Le Corbusier and I inherited his book 'modulor' in Japanese 2nd edition from 1950s.
Apparently the commissioner Mr and Mrs Savoye didn't enjoy the house much because of dumpness and leakage but I myself enjoyed the house. It is very airy in the living room and especially I liked the big kitchen. I happened to get asked to open the big door between the living room and the patio but it was very heavy. We needed 3 people including a strong guy. It is very different from the Ronchamp and am impressed how much he was capable of.

soufflé

She showed me how to make soufflé yesterday.
This one is savory and can be main dish. She made béchamel first and put egg yorks, a lot of cheeze, spice muscade (nutmeg) and s&p. It was the first time for me to see the nutmeg in the seed shape.
I loved its texture and am hoping to try variations.

parcour saint german

It rained today in Paris.

After daily routine in the morning we went out to look around the installation in the cafes/boutiques around St German des Pres.
It was a great reason to go into these shops (which I wouldn't normally go) and I was happy to find work I like. It was by Carlos Aires.
The image in the picture consists of 3 elements. One is the actual object: a turning table, another one is a moving image on the back and the other one is the reflection of the image on a glass in front. And the guy looks as if he is walking on the turning table.
I felt like it is as if we make our own story. We try to make sense of the world in front of us from many elements not knowing what is real and what is not. But as far as it makes sense it appears as real. (Or we try to convince ourselves by making sense out of random happenings somehow.)

tomates farcies

Today we made Tomates farcies: stuffed tomatoes. She used tomatoes I've never seen in my country nor London: tomates coeur de boeuf (means 'the heart of beef'). They usually use it because it is bigger and has thick skin, but you can still make it with normal tomatoes.
We had it on a plate with quinoa, and when we cut it the quinoa soaked the lovely juice and it was also scrumptious.
So far she's been showing me French cuisines and I'm very happy to know they also have light and simple dishes. (I'm very happy that I haven't gained much weight yet!)

quiche

I am away from London and am staying at my friend's place in Paris. I have no plan of sightseeing this time.
So far I had croissant, baguette, pate and gallette.
Tonight she demonstrated how to make quiche for me. It was quite simple and easy. Surprisingly quiche is originally from Germany although it is so familiar as French cuisine.
