farnham

Yesterday I went out to Newham to deliver some pieces to The New Ashgate Gallery for their next display. There will be another lovely mix of makers starting today! I made a new series of mugs for them.
The gallery is in the town which has strong connection with crafts and hosts annual craft festivals. Therefore despite being a small town there are quite a few places to see. Although, this was my first visit. So after the gallery, I visited to Crafts Study Centre to see the exhibition of Ladi Kwali who worked with Michael Cardew in 60s. There are some water pots that have her iconic shapes and motifs and some other shapes that I could see the exchange of skills and cultures. It made me think more of my next research trip in Japan!

Christmas Open 14

Hi. Hope you all have been well.
It's all crazily hectic here with loads of Christmas orders and a few more shows..! (That's why I haven't been able to blog!!)
Thanks to those who came to Made London. It was a great show and I enjoyed the whole experience so much! I will write about it some time... hopefully before the new year!!

The coming-up shows are: (Please go to the links for more information!)
Christmas show at Cavaliero Finn, on 29th-30th (Sat & Sun) 10:30am-6pm. They are one of a few agents I have been working with for a long time from the very early stage of my career. I am very pleased they liked my new range and am glad to work together again for this show!

They are one of my favourite galleries. They have been working on their space renovation and this will be their first re-opening show! I'm so glad to be part of it!

Christmas show at Cambridge Contemporary Crafts.
I will update the info as soon as I get the latest information about this!

And, of course, our annual Open Studio!
This time we have joined together with other local studios. (Although we only open for one day 29TH NOV!) This is a great chance to see the working studios of great makers such as Marcio Mattos & Marilza Gouvea and Martin Pearce and his guest exhibitor Annabel Faraday in their studios in Broadway Market Mews, and Karen Bunting on Beck Road (just a minute walking from Broadway Market!)

Looking forward to seeing you!!

Another Ceramics in the City - Design Festival 14

Yesterday I went to see one of the design districts, Shoreditch Design Triangle. This year it looks even more interesting with many more shops/galleries opening their doors.
SCP, one of my favourite shops. They were showing some new collections. One of these is Mashiko pottery that has come to London a few times now. This time in this shop they seem to have different shapes, maybe more suitable for food style here.
In the same shop another collection by a very talented designer Reiko Kaneko who's now based in Stoke-On-Trent. VERY beautiful terracotta tableware with a careful attention to details, earthy but modern. Although, personally I have a problem with unglazed surface for functional ware when it's low-fired. It's more porous and hard to keep it clean hygienically and cosmetically.
This is very jolly collection of vases by Bethan Laura Wood Alter, Max Lamb, Martino Gamper and somebody (! Sorry I couldn't remember his/her name, but makes beautiful milkshake glaze! I will edit here as soon as I find out his name!) at Ace Hotel. I loved how they're displayed with flowers and, really, their playfulness as one and as a group.
These plant pots are not just for the festival. They are in their bar. I just love the way they go so well with the plants and how they are hang.
And Studio Potapota for Aesop. The ceramics is made by a Japanese duo Hidekazu & Kaori Sogabe. Interesting...
Luna & Curious. They transformed a part of their shop to a ceramic studio with a table to make your ceramics with an extruder to play with. If you like to try out some ceramic technique you better pop in there.
In another favourite shop: Choosing Keeping is the show of two artists. The ceramic work is by Morgan Peck. Another artist is David Bachelor. The collection that is quiet but fun goes so well with the stationery Julia has chosen from all over the world. It's such a beautiful space! Please don't miss this!

As you can see, you have a VERY GOOD reason to come to East this weekend. Please don't miss Ceramics in the City at Geffrye Museum. Open Fri - Sun 10am-5pm. Late Event is on Thu 6pm - 8:30pm! See you there!

mishima style

Now it's 10 days to go before Ceramics in The City. I'm just doing the last firings...
The new series I've been making for the upcoming shows (also for Made London) is called Mishima style (Mishima-de) in Japan. The technique applied is called inlaying here. We use different clay from the body clay (that we make pots with) in another colour to fill the incised marks. The style originally came from Korea of Koryo period, Buncheong pottery, to Japan.
We named it Mishima-de as its fine patterns looked like Mishima calender: one of our old ones. (the link is in Japanese, but it's got a picture of the calender.) It often implies floral and animal motifs.
This time I wanted to make it a bit more British with something that we see in a big group here... Would you like to know what it is? Please come to Ceramics in the City at Geffrye museum!
The pictures are showing two stages of the making process: after incising with patterns and when getting rid of excess clay after inlaying.

the making of kohiki -2

We use liquid clay called 'slip'. There are some variations of it, we adjust the recipe, consistency and colour depending on the use of it. Kohiki style has a layer of white slip under the glaze.
The main ingredient for my slip is very fine clay called China clay. I dipped my thrown piece in one go to put layer inside and outside, but this has been causing another trouble. I assume, in my case anyway, when this fine clay seals all the surface the air gets trapped in the clay body. Although, the air needs to escape somewhere and caused bubble in the body. I acknowledged this last year but after a rather long Christmas holiday I totally forgot about it...
At the same time I had changed the slip recipe hoping to improve the fit with the glaze, but it caused funny reaction instead. I haven't found out yet why this happened, but I had to return to the old recipe.
After all these shifts and adjustments, in the very last minute for the pop-up shop in Serpentine gallery, I got the best firing result so far. I hope you can imagine how happy I was after so many firings of such a low success rate!
Anyway, the pop-up shop conjunct with Martino Gamper's 'Design is a state of mind' is another Momosan shop. She has been giving me critical and very open opinions, which has been helping me to challenge something new. Thank you so so much!
I hope you can make it to the shop, also, of course, to the charming exhibition! There are so much personal and fun things in there!

the making of kohiki -1

Finally! It looks like it's all OK?
The furrow in snow series has been a real struggle... (just because I lack scientific understanding of the materials!)

First of all I mix clay and use Terracotta: low-firing red clay, in it. The maximum temperature for the clay is 1180 but I usually fire to 1260 with other clays that I've been using. All my glazes are designed for this temperature, but if I go this high this mixed clay body starts bubbling.
So I had to drop the temperature a little bit to avoid this problem, which brought another problem: the glaze doesn't mature. All the glaze has a temperature that needs to be reached. The glaze consists of three elements: glassy material to cover the surface and body material so that glaze fit on the clay body and 'flux' to melt these materials. By combining the three elements (from lots of raw materials!) we make a glaze to get a desired surface.
Mine for this series is supposed to be a very simple one: transparent glaze (but there are so many 'transparent' surface and I didn't want shiny one or runny one. I wanted warm one that goes a bit opaque where it's thicker.)
Anyway, back to the story, to mature the glaze at a lower temperature I had to alter the recipe.
Altering the recipe in ceramics is not as easy as doing it in cooking. I always wonder if there's any 'super mad ceramicist' who can tell from the recipe how the glaze behaves and looks without making it. I think there are many who can roughly guess what might happen, but I don't think anybody can tell exactly. (Anyway that's the fun part of ceramics.)
Anyway as I can't 'calculate' glaze I just mixed some combinations. I got a good recipe but at the same time got another problem. It's because the new series has got a layer of slip between the clay and the glaze.

(...continues.)

a report before the open studio

Today, first thing in the morning I opened my kiln. We had a bit funny firing this time. We set the kiln to finish at 7am but when I came in yesterday rather late at 9:30 it was still going up at around 1245. I thought it's odd but thought maybe another studio mate who stayed late the day before might have extended the delay. And then I started working on slip-casting checking the temperature every time I passed the kiln. And I realised it was going up really really slowly, it only went up 20℃ in an hour whereas it should be about 250/h. It wasn't a great sign... so I turned it off at 1265. (I usually fire to 1275 which is, with my kiln, 1260.)
I was anxious about the firing until I opened it this morning. It wasn't a disaster, it was a rather normal one with a few bits of disappointing pieces, which was a relief.
What is better rather than worse, I got one piece that I'm really really happy with. A tiny tiny bottle I curved its bottom with Japanese chisels and put two glazes on. With a very slow firing at the end almost like a loooong soak, the glaze flowed really nicely. I love it so much that I don't want to sell. It pays off all my worries.
But I wonder why these things happen always before the show??

all wrapped up

I am taking part in the Christmas exhibition at Cambridge contemporary crafts. Please check out for your special gifts!
(And don't forget to visit Kettle's yard when in Cambridge!)

play time in work!

While working on a few orders I started playing on the wheel. I just tried to enjoy the very therapeutic process while working in a small mass-production.. then started making a series of very small pots (hope you can tell from the size of the turning tool in the front.). They'll be available during our Open studio which is coming up in the next month. (24th & 25th November, 1st & 2nd December. Please keep the date in your diary!)
Our studio mates Parasite Ceramics are working in the Bloomsbury Festival this weekend. Please get involved in the actions happening in the area!

fig

Here comes one of my best favourite fruits! I made compote first and put some into muffins.
I altered peach muffin recipe. I replaced peach with fig but it wasn't great as fig hasn't got much acidity. I had it with Stichelton and it tasted better so I'm thinking of adding some feta cheese or something to the recipe. I hope I get a good recipe while it's in the season.
I have been enjoying finding fig dishes here. Salad, tart, bread, pizza... We also have a bit unusual way of having it... with miso paste! I still remember "how weird!" I thought when I saw it on the dinner table. I need to look into the recipe as I've never made it by myself...
Hopefully two recipes will be on here in the near future.

The tree house and the new bowls are in the shop at NCCD. If you live nearby please check and take some home with you!

new bowls

The new bowls are also shown during Open Studio.

I just sent off a statement for the show of new bowls at Aberystwyth Arts Centre. The show is between 9th July and 18th August.
It is the second hardest task for me to write a statement about a new product after giving it a name... The bowl still don't have a name... (and I still have to make some more...)

beenleigh blue

The balancing diet to the weekend: broad beans salad with pink fir apple, celery, onion, chive and Beenleigh blue.
Beenleigh blue is made by the maker who produces Devon blue I used in another salad. It is less salty than most of blue cheeses and is made from ewe's milk which I think subtler but richer than cow's in flavour. I love it so much.
The bowl is thrown and curved by me. I will have some of these new bowls during our Open Studio. Please come and take some home with you! The details about the Open Studio will follow very soon.

koya dofu and green pea rice

Koya dofu is another traditional ingredient in Japanese food. We freeze tofu and dry it completely. It's like a hard sponge when we buy it and we usually soak it in water before using. It absorbs the soup when being cooked and tastes lovely when the soup comes out in the mouth! This time I used it in a Chinese style.
The peas has come in season now. The first dish I made with it was mame gohan (green pea rice). We cook rice and pea with a bit of sake and salt. It goes well with tomato based soups and currys. Please try it while it's in the shops!

I had new bowls in the firing over the weekend and I got them out yesterday. (one of them is in the picture on the left upper corner) I'm quite happy with the shape and I'm hoping to make it in porcelain in the end... Let's see how it works.

changes in the new year -1

Today my neighbour-friend Taeko (8 years old) visited me as usual.
She's a really really lovely girl who is clever, sensitive and very funny. I've seen her since she was 6 months old. Time flies, but it has been really lovely to see her growing up to such a nice girl.
She has been working with me from time to time since she was 2 years old and now she knows a lot about ceramics: how to make moulds, how to smooth the surface and a lot of technical problems in making. It is great for me to know that I am a part of her childhood and had something I passed on to her and shared with her.
She always gives me some inspirations, ideas and smiles. Unfortunately she's leaving to Spain very soon... I will miss her A LOT.
She started making me a lovely plate using her own mould.

The next show is in The craft centre and the Design gallery in Leeds.

seasonal greetings

Lovely Christmas presents made by Margot (2 years old) for her family with a lot of help from her mum. I really love little ones' abstract painting. I think it was a little hard for her to see how they will look like after firing as the colours are mixed with clay and don't show much. But she was really enjoying the painting bit smartly performing all the tasks. She made me laugh when she refused to use a certain colour just because there wasn't much in the container (but enough to draw some lines!)... This was my final project for this year.
The year 2011 is going really quickly. I had lots of feelings with all the happenings in Japan and personally but am not sure if I've grown from these. I really hope the new year will be a really peaceful one for everybody.

workshop

We had a lovely time during our annual Open Studio. It was really great to see you again!
We had workshop on the last day Sunday and continuously had a few visitors with their little ones.
Our new studiomate Megan is so good at working with kids and have a great knowledge of painting and printing on ceramics. She prepared some bisque-ware to draw on: tiles, plates, mugs and sugar bowls...

This 6-month-old baby had foot prints on tiles. She looked having a great sensation from the brush strokes!
Our neighbour Indigo and his friend Finn painted on tiles and mugs. I was impressed to see them being so concentrated!
It is a great fun for kids. If you're interested, please get in touch with me. We're thinking of regular workshops for kids and adults.
