design festival 14

On Saturday when I was working in the studio my studio mate popped in and reminded me that Design Festival had started. Oh no! I had almost none information what's happening where apart from the major shows. As this is the most exciting time of the year I get to see a lot of nice things in the city, I don't want to miss them just because I'm preparing for my show.
So V&A. I loved the Wish List. It's a collection of objects that 10 design specialists commissioned 10 craftsmen/designers to make the one-off pieces that they dreamt of having. It's so sweet because it shows their personalities and the stories in their making. It's just simply a VERY lovely project.
And the Open Studio of their resident ceramicist Nao Matsuyama. It's always nice to see the artists' working studios, to see the tiny bits of experiments and their drawings, pieces of their inspiration.
Also another exhibition in the museum: Disobedient Object. The objects that were used in protests and that were made/chosen to protest something. It's interesting when a shape or a foam becomes to symbolise something, even more when the message is strong. The show was compact but it made me think A LOT.

I also headed down to Ealing to see Crafting Narrative. The show has a group of objects that their designers/makers try to tell their story through. It took me a while to understand some of the stories, but it was interesting to see different approaches they took. I also loved their playful display.

And a pop-up shop Hay Mini Market. I adore their beautiful glazes on the pots and cones. Seeing nice glazes always makes me want to explore more in my work too. I also loved their stationery: wooden rulers, towers of memo pads and notebooks. The only concern is that they are just too good to have in my muddy studio!

weird new experience in the new year

So the new year has started. Do you have your new year's resolutions? It's funny that if I google 'new year resolution', one of the most common words that comes next is 'idea' and some websites are offering what you should be wishing to achieve. Maybe those who hasn't got willpower strong enough to refuse them might have to be wishing something they even didn't think of? I had my own one that was trying not to eat sweets much, which was already broken when Christmas sweets are on offer in supermarkets! I'll have to rethink of it already.

What I did new in this year was dubbing for a film. It is a documentary about a particular subject in Japan and they interviewed some people. And they've lost a part of voice of a woman because of noisy background and another reason. And I had to speak lip sync with the woman whose lifestyle I wouldn't like and don't understand. (I've watched the rough cut of the film before.)
When I heard my voice as her after the recording I felt really weird. I felt as if she is me and that idea really disgusted me. Although I enjoyed this new experience it reminded me of another nasty experience some years ago as well. I'm hoping to digest this weird experience this year!

how to enjoy bowls (in japanese manner)

After a bit of struggle a new series of bowls is coming to finished product, nearly. I'm now taking place a few tests to check if this is OK as tableware.
There are a few simple things we potters do: thermal test by putting a piece in an oven, acid test by leaving a slice of lemon on the surface and stain test by making a tea few times in the piece.
But all these things can be unnecessary in Japan as we even drink tea out of Raku bowl which is a very toxic form as a bowl! (Here is a culture shock!)
There are glaze surfaces you recognise as fault but we Japanese appreciate as beauty: crackle, pinhole and crawling etc etc... And we enjoy its change of colour by stain and aging. When the favourite piece got broken we even mend it with lacquer, gold and silver (kintsugi), and this way we appreciate it even more.
These are basic things we do in handling hand-made bowls in Japan.
1. After the purchase, put it in hot water on hob and keep it boiling for a while. We put rice into the water, which is better but not necessary.
2. Don't leave it in water. The bowl absorb water from crack, pinholes and unglazed surface and this makes it easier to break and also the smell goes inside it if the water is not clean.
3. Don't wash it in dishwasher. I would think most of the bowls stands with hot water in the dishwasher but soft tableware made with terracotta and earthenware clay can get easily chipped in a mass-washing. Anyway, I think washing-up is the best time to get to know the bowl, so have a lovely time with your favourites!

one of my favourite bowls, broken and mended with kintsugi technique

early summer outing

I've got a newly married Japanese couple / friends visiting London. The husband is a very old friend since primary school. He lived in London for a year or so and loves the city. He checks the UK news in Japan and sometimes knows better than me what's happening here. The wife I met for the first time is also an international person having worked in Denmark and Norway and I enjoyed the conversation so much. There are things that only Japanese who lived abroad can talk and share... by having another perspective to things.
As we didn't have much foreigners on our islands we have a very unique 'common sense' that can be only shared among Japanese. And we can say we have a very rich culture for that and these things look mysterious or confusing to foreign visitors.
We went down to Maltby street, which she wanted and brought the area's business map. I was so happy to find there are more traders in further down.
The couple was surprised with the weather here. It is much more comfortable comparing to humid and hot rainy season in Japan but is very cold...

after 2 years

Today is the 2nd anniversary of the tsunami & nuclear disaster in Tohoku.
It has been struggle to get their normal life back there since we still don't know what to do with the contaminated rubble. ...(sigh), I just hope they haven't given up their hope yet...!
I feel so lucky to have home to go back and my family and friends to see in Japan. It's so far away from them here that I sometimes feel sad but I also have so many things I love about this city. Difficult...!
One of many things I love about London, English cheeses! I love stilton, apple and roasted walnut on toast. I think rocket tastes better here.

looking back at Japan when in London

As I'm living abroad I get asked (I also ask myself) what is my Japanese-ness and find myself with lots of questions. I think this happens to us when we put ourselves out of our original context however further or not. Every time I come back to Japan I find what I've been missing in London and appreciate them more. On the other hand I feel weird about things that I'd never thought of before coming to London.
Here I will put some shots from my stay. These are things I feel good about my country. Maybe it's better to leave them without much captions.

(above) a bench on a train platform in Takamatsu.
pricey antiques in Sunday street Market, Kochi.
an elderly on the weekend.
an elderly at work in Hasami.
primary school students commuting on their own. (this is possible only in the countryside now...)
Kumamon: a very popular mascot character of Kumamoto prefecture.

a lovely new shop on columbia road

On the way to Maltby street I found a new shop on Columbia road: Choosing keeping. It is a very beautiful stationery shop. Julia the owner choose these lovely and quality products from all around the world. (And a lot from Japan too!) Notebooks, pens, erasers, pencil sharpeners (and leather pencil sharpner case!), books and clips... She is very knowledgeable about the stationery and could tell so much about their history. If you like to work with beautiful products, this is the place to go to find one.
This shop also reminded me of my school memory. I loved imported stationery as they looked pretty to me. I used to use thick 'mead' notebook which was divided into 4 or 5 sections with indexes and not in A4 or B4. (In Japan B4 is very common size for school notebook.) Sometimes the teachers collected our notebooks to see if we'd done homework and that's when I had a problem. I couldn't use that notebook for other subjects.
Once I wanted to have only blues in my pen case. As a student you would have to have a red pen to mark texts etc but I didn't like to have one. I was in dilemma... What I did to solve the problem was to paint blue on the outside of red ink tube. None of my friends could tell that was red not blue. I don't know why I was so obsessed then. That was my blue period...
Now we have so much well-designed stationery in Japan and I wish I was a student now!

design, design and design

Here in London it is right in the middle of the Design Festival. Usually I would be working for Origin at this time but as it isn't happening this year I'm hoping to see some shows. I'm bit excited that I can finally catch up with what's happening in the design world today.
So far I've seen a few shows in my commuting area... and what's interesting is that their design is not just about the form or colours. They are also about how they work: the way they connect with the rest of the world (the manufactures, craft makers and their community as well as with us, users/audience) through designs. Some designers work in the local community, some designers work with the community that needs a lot of improvement so that our expenditure flows into that community.
I feel like how the design is produced is becoming a big part of 'design' now... to design better community. It is quite an interesting and increasing shift I've seen recently.

harira soup

Yesterday's dinner Harira soup. It is very easy and nutritious with lots of lentils and chick peas.
This dish always reminds me of my trip in Morocco almost 10 years ago now. I and my friend planned a trip to see our Moroccan teacher and a few pottery places there. It was tiring as we had to negotiate throughout the journey in whatever we did but we had so much more fun.
The sky at night with beautiful and bright stars in Ouarzazate and the whole view during the bus journey between Ouarzazate and Zagora. It was so beautiful when we crossed the high Atlas at sunrise with Arabic music in the background. I could never forget these scenes. (and the tagines we had in 20mins break in a small town between the mountains!)
And the accident on the way back to Marrakech! The front window of our bus got hit with a small pebble from a van accidentally being flicked with its tire and the glass window got broken. I and most of the passengers were asleep and got woken up by the sound. The driver was driving as nothing had happened. After a few miles of driving, he stopped the bus to get his driving area clearer. The local passengers were sitting in their seats watching him. Nobody looked surprised. We got back to the city on the bus with the air mildly circulating all the time. We had a very clear view after that. It was really funny.
We stayed in a local family's house in exchange with the work in a pottery shop and factory in Tamegroute. We woke up really early like 6. But the women were already getting breakfast ready. We had sticky soup almost like salty porridge and then the men left for work. And then we had pancake with some kind of sauce (I don't remember what it was...). When later we joined the men at the shop and the factory they were complaining about women being lazy for having two breakfasts. It was good to know men also feel unfair about something in men-dominating society.
Looking back this experience always makes me feel like travelling again hopefully to some countries in Asia where it's not so civilised and their local traditions is still very obvious... Maybe someday!

Anyway this soup was the first meal when we were in Marrakech.

all the little things

What a hectic week I had! I get busy once in a while but it wasn't like that. I had to move around for something I didn't expect to happen at all! I nearly missed the deadline for the show in Aberystwyth and didn't realise how hot and nice that day was...
I'm not going to the details as it would depress me but it's happened and I wonder how you process these things in your head. Do you believe in karma? Do you think these things are meant to happen? Do you regret things you didn't do to prevent it? How long ago do you go back in that case? And how do you come out of it??

Anyway, let's move onto something happier.
Yesterday, I went to see Grayson Perry's tapestries in Victoria Miro, which he explored with the channel 4 documentary series. The artist was the motivation that I started ceramics and his pots have been always inspiration for the fact that something can be more than something.
And happy coincidence! The gallery was having another show at the same time: the installation by Sarah Sze. I love her work, the delicacy of it, the colour and all the little things she makes. It reminds me that the universe is interconnecting in a very fragile balance.

...And I felt OK.

hijiki

This is a proper Japanese breakfast...
The other day keen blog followers of mine said to me that they were surprised to know that I eat fish for breakfast. I felt the same when I saw bacon and sausage on a plate here. (Why not only sausage or bacon? Aren't they similar thing made from pork?) It is culture and something so natural to us until somebody from other culture points out. (Although, even he points out we can't explain why...) I love finding these little things while living in another culture.

The one dish maybe you haven't seen in my blog is the black stuff on the right hand side. It is a kind of seaweed: Hijiki. I cooked it with a few vegetables in fish stock, sugar and soy sauce. This is the orthodox cooking method.
We have a lot of dried food: seaweeds, vegetables and seafood... This is not only for preservation but also for taste. It brings out its sweetness maximum. For me it is very convenient as I can bring back a lot from Japan!

kale

Stir-fried kale and quinoa with sugarsnap peas in tomato sauce.

I can't believe it's already a year since the tsunami in Japan. I thought of the people who experienced it, who struggled since then, who lost their loved ones. I wonder what they thought today... I hope they are seeing more positive future now...

I had a small project this weekend: to make a camera cover.
I had a pair of gloves I wore over the last two winters. They are designed by Hikaru Noguchi and are of fine quality but their finger bits have worn out because I cycle wearing them. As they are still in good condition (apart from finger bits) I couldn't throw them away. I had been thinking what to do with them.
I have a digital SLR and have been a little annoyed with its cover as it drops off when it gets knocked (Well, actually I've had the same problem since I got an analog one when I was 20.). Then the other day I found out the arm bit of my favourite gloves fit to the lens perfectly. So it's got transformed into this (below) last night.
I took it to a flower's market today and found out it works well as cushion too whereas the bare lens used to hit people in a crowd.

ceramic art london 2012

It is nice always when I feel spring. When I see more squirrels, tiny leaves in a tree and spring flowers.
It was a beautiful day today. I started off with yoga session and then went to a bike shop to pick up my mine. It needed a lot of TLC and came back with a new basket in front. Now I can carry more food!

Then I went to see Ceramic Art London. My new discovery was Stephanie Quayle.  Her animal sculpture is like 3D drawing with strong brush strokes. So confident with clay. I really admire her work.
Although, my favourite in the show was Susan O'Byrne still. She has more of small sculptures this year and more patterns on the surface, which made her sculpture more attractive. I wish I could have one of her work someday...
It was a really inspiring and encouraging show as I also met some people I know (not only in exhibitors but in visitors as well) and had a lovely chat.
I really hope something comes out from what I've been experimenting in the studio!

seasonal greetings

Lovely Christmas presents made by Margot (2 years old) for her family with a lot of help from her mum. I really love little ones' abstract painting. I think it was a little hard for her to see how they will look like after firing as the colours are mixed with clay and don't show much. But she was really enjoying the painting bit smartly performing all the tasks. She made me laugh when she refused to use a certain colour just because there wasn't much in the container (but enough to draw some lines!)... This was my final project for this year.
The year 2011 is going really quickly. I had lots of feelings with all the happenings in Japan and personally but am not sure if I've grown from these. I really hope the new year will be a really peaceful one for everybody.

earth day

After a few days of chilly and cloudy days we have summer again here.
As I planned a trip to Japan in a few weeks I've been working without weekends and holidays. But I'm not missing the lovely sunshine. We have a great terrace corridor outside our studio and am working out there some time. The clay dries really quickly and it's been great to work with the material and the process.

This time with the troubles with the nuclear plants in Fukushima, we really have to think about the sustainable way to produce energy. I am not a specialist so can't do any suggestions but I hope we'll find a way. And the only thing I could do is to be conscious of the environment. There are some people who gave us the ideas of the nature, the earth and how to communicate with them. (And there have been a lot of arguments about the environment as the other or a part of you: the nature to conquer or the nature to work with.) Japanese had been good at working with the nature but we might have been conceited with the modern technology.

Here is a quote to think on the earth day. A quote from 'Operating manual for Spaceship Earth' by Buckminster Fuller.
"Of course, our failures are a consequence of many factors, but possibly one of the most important is the fact that society operates on the theory that specialization is the key to success, not realizing that specialization precludes comprehensive thinking."

hare

'Hare' is a wild rabbit in English but in Japanese (晴れ) it means 'sunny'. (The pronunciation is different... it's more like 'hooray'.)
The weather has been really lovely in the last 10 days or so here in London and has been making me sleepy in my sunny and bright studio. I hope we get more days like this this year...
Also 'hare' means 'special'. When you do something special we say 'standing on the stage of hare'. We have this idea of 'hare'(special) and 'ke'(ordinary) strongly in Shintoism. By having both in the life (by accentuating 'hare' days) we carry on the energy of life.
We went to my friend's wedding party yesteday. I wore 'hare' shoes to celebrate her special day.
In Japan a lot of people are feeling guilty of even having their ordinary life after seeing the hardship of the victims of the disasters in the North. It is one of the beautiful thing about Japanese who cares about other people too but I hope at least they're enjoying sakura blossoms.

japan relief

Today we had a stall to raise donation for the victims of the earthquake in Japan.
In the last week I was talking with my friend Tomoko how terrible what's happening in Japan and we were feeling really helpless. Then she was thinking to stand in the market which is held every saturday in our area asking for donation. I wasn't sure if we could raise much money that way. I thought of having a stall of lottery to get a piece of artwork or some sort. Then she said we could just sell things so we did.
It wasn't as simple as that actually because of a law of selling on the streets but Arno the cafe manager of La Bouche and the market organiser sorted things out for us.
We gathered almost anything from our friends and their friends to sell at the stall. Our collection varied from a toy to a car.
It was like a charity shop and people bought a lot of things and donated to us along with kind, heart-warming messages. The band in the market played for donation to us. It was very generous and thoughtfull of them. We were very touched.
It was a great day to feel the warmth of sunshine and peoples' hearts supporting us. I will never forget today in my life and this memory will keep me carry on.
We raised a lot more than we expected. Thank you SO SO much.
(We'll have a stall in Hackney City Farm tomorrow and again in the school yard at the north end of Broadway Market on the next Saturday. The money we raised will go to Japanese Red Cross, Doctors without borders and Civic Force.)

chicken

Yesterday we tried Jamie's recipe. Originally I found the recipe to get rid of a frozen whole chicken my friend had for a while. Its Chinese package said 'Old chicken' already and it aged in the freezer on top of it.
Anyway we defreezed it. On the next day as I tried to prepare it I found its head...! I couldn't do anything with it. My friend cut it off but it's not the same to do it with a Chinese sharp knife that chop it with one stroke. He struggled with it a bit. Later we also found it's got legs folded in the belly but decided not to do anything with them then. I was so chicken. We seasoned it from far away and baked it but the result didn't have much meat after all this effort...
It was a quite horrific experience we might be laughing about for years. Anyway we still wanted to try the recipe so used normal chicken thighs from a normal supermarket. The chicken tasted really nice in spite of easy cooking and seasoning. Definitely this is going to be on my recipe book.

camera! camera! camera!

My friend is into photography as a hobby and has a nice camera. It's so different from my snap shot... Now a digital SLR is on my wishing list.
The shot is taken in Climpson & sons: my local coffee shop but very good one. I'm not into coffee at all, though. Actually it's one of the things I'd like to avoid if I can. I don't like its bitterness much and would get headache after 2 cups (1 cup is OK). Also even if a cup is made by my favourites I can drink latte but not flat white or cappuccino. It's one of the things make me feel childish. I really wish I could write a novel in a coffee shop!

tea

Brothers in my cupboard

I started reading a book although I should be studying for a test.
It is about the key founder of our tea culture and the philosophy of it but in the writer's personal approach. (The writer is the owner of Leek house I mentioned in this blog earlier.) I somehow felt like reading it again after 15 years.
Back then I didn't like his essay but now I'm enjoying it. It's not just because my perspective has changed but also because I'm in favour of him knowing what he's being doing. It's funny what you read is depending on your mood.
