farnham

Yesterday I went out to Newham to deliver some pieces to The New Ashgate Gallery for their next display. There will be another lovely mix of makers starting today! I made a new series of mugs for them.
The gallery is in the town which has strong connection with crafts and hosts annual craft festivals. Therefore despite being a small town there are quite a few places to see. Although, this was my first visit. So after the gallery, I visited to Crafts Study Centre to see the exhibition of Ladi Kwali who worked with Michael Cardew in 60s. There are some water pots that have her iconic shapes and motifs and some other shapes that I could see the exchange of skills and cultures. It made me think more of my next research trip in Japan!

harvest show 2014

On a beautiful sunny day yesterday, I popped out the studio for a few hours to see the Harvest Festival.
It seems you enjoy creating all sorts of awards in everything. Especially I love this kind of sweet competitions. I love seeing the effort that goes in any small things and the critical eyes that appreciate and praise it.
One day I would like to visit one of the fields of those huge pumpkins!

new bowl! (to my personal collection)

Thank you so much to those who came to see me at Ceramics in the City. It was a great weekend for me, seeing a lovely audience who is knowledgeable and appreciates what we do and spending a weekend in the lovely venue.
Also I felt so honoured to be among the talented makers and had a good chance to speak with them. I learnt so much about their practice and ceramic terms.
I swapped work with a few of other exhibitors as a remembrance, and one of these was Hannah McAndrew who makes beautiful English slipware. Something about her work made me feel home, and I fell in love with a particular one that had a simpler slip decoration.
The great thing about having a good pottery is to make you think what to cook and how to use it. Since I got this I've been thinking all sorts of dishes. Yesterday finally I spent some good amount of time in the kitchen cooking and enjoyed the dish. It's one of the happiest moments. Thank you, Hannah.

kombucha

It's been such a long time since I last blogged...! The reason I stopped doing it was for me to have more time to think through. The blog is bit too short to go to the depth I wanted to explore, but my friends the other day told me that they were enjoying my blog... So I decided to come back and talk about the tiny little things around me. OK..., what's new?

The very new thing for me is Kombucha. I got 'mother' from my friend more than a month ago, and now I've got the second 'mother'. It's fermented tea with lots of bacteria good for you. (wikipedia
For me, what changed was my headache. I don't have it anymore so I feel much better. Also, I think I have a better stomach. I get hungry quicker than I used to... Apparently the amount of enzyme you can produce in a life time is limited, less as you age, so this is a quick and easy way to supplement.
Try it out if you like this sort of things, but carefully. Please always follow the instruction, there are plenty online.
I'm also brewing ginger beer for the summer!

advent

This is the last piece of stollen already. I need another loaf!
We celebrate Christmas in Japan but it's not a National holiday. When I was little we would have our little relatives around at home and had a party. We would have Kentucky Fried Chicken and curry and log-shaped Christmas cake made with either ice cream (I used to love it!) or fresh cream. I would hang a stocking next to my bed, but it was just a very ordinary sock I would wear every day... What a shame...!
It‘s not quite the same, I think, how they celebrate the day in Japan now as we used to do but is still pretty much in Japanese style I think.
I'm also finding the variations in Europe too. I have an Austrian friend with two kids. I joined their wreath making workshop the other day. I'm still working on it after 10 days...

national apple day

21st October is National apple day in England and we celebrate the fruit on the weekend close to the date. (I found out it's quite recent thing only since 1990.)
This Sunday I popped out the studio to Borough market to take the third attempt in the peeling competition along with my own knife! Although, we arrived too early and the competition was later in the programme and on a stage whereas it used be anytime under a marquee. So I gave up the idea.
I tried some apples in an acceptable amount at the tasting table: Shoreditch white (sweet but not much aroma), Wellcome (tiny bit sweet and tiny bit sharpness in a tiny tiny apple), Joybells (juicy and good balance of subtle sweetness and sharpness).
I always try as much variety as I can from markets but every time I come to this festival I found a lot more I've never seen. I hope I'll finish tasting all the English varieties some day!
I hope you also enjoyed the day with your favourite apples?
ちなみに真ん中はKaty、右がWorcester pearmain(Discovery appleの親種に当たるのではないかと言われているらしい。)

british ceramics biennial

Yesterday I made a journey up to Stoke-on-trent to see BCB.
They are having a big exhibition of ceramics of today in the old Spode factory converted into a gallery space.
They've got such lovely works and their each approach to the materials, ideas and forms so diverse, I enjoyed it so much.
The city is full of history with grand lovely buildings and bottle kilns, ceramics workshops running over the weekends. It's definitely worth paying a visit especially when BCB is on (till 10th Nov).
(And please don't forget to have Staffordshire oatcakes!)

winchcombe pottery

Skipping about a day plus in Bath, on the way back to London we visited Winchcombe pottery just outside of the Cotswolds town. This is one of the places related to Japanese Mingei movement.
The workshop has been on the site since the early 1800's but was derelict after the war. Then Michael Cardew who was trained under Bernard Leach got the place and gradually the team grew in the number. They practised the philosophy of Mingei which was to make affordable hand-made pottery for everyday use and in old English syle Cardew was looking at
One of the crew Ray Finch was left with the place when Cardew took off for travelling. Now his son Mike took over the workshop and has been making beautiful domestic tableware.
Mike was a very lovely guy and told us the history and the stories behind making, and showed us around in the studio.
This old-fashioned machine would be used in a bakery factory to make dough. Now in their studio it's mixing clays.
This is a hand-build down draught wood-firing kiln. These things really make me feel like I'm very amateur. They also have a non-working bottle kiln in the site which is worth seeing.
I really love the earthy feel of their pottery. I got a casserole pot from a 'seconds' shelf. Great buy. I'm looking forward to winter now even though I'm also enjoying the unbelievably summery sunny weather at the moment.

crop circles in wiltshire

From tuesday this week when it's so sunny and hot we travelled to Bath through Wiltshire and back through Gloucestershire. I discovered other sides of this country. It was so fun!
With my ankle flown into London on the way to Amsterdam, we drove to the first destination Crop circle information centre. He's had a strong passion to study and introduce mysteries especially about the UFO-related stuff alongside his main job as a professor. As he reached the retirement age he now has plenty of time to concentrate on his life-long interest.
So one of the very few things he wanted to see in this country was crop circles. I came forward as a navigator and also took my friend who's been staying here as a tourist.
On that day there were 2 circles that can be accessed. The first one was newly made a few days before rather roughly. There were a few people investigating the circle and gave us useful tips (?) such as the very middle of the circle is a power spot. I found a few coins and a banana on the spot, so left my 5p too. One woman said she came from America and was measuring the size. One guy said he feels power from the middle.
There was a van parked near the site and a girl was reading a book in the shadow of the vehicle. She said she believes those circles are 80% made by a higher intelligence but wasn't giving much information except that. Apparently she works with the farmers and was taking a few pounds off the visitors to the site.
We couldn't find the second one as it had been made a while before and had almost disappeared.
Personally I don't care about these circles but it was great to experience walking through the field of rye, barley or wheat!

early summer outing

I've got a newly married Japanese couple / friends visiting London. The husband is a very old friend since primary school. He lived in London for a year or so and loves the city. He checks the UK news in Japan and sometimes knows better than me what's happening here. The wife I met for the first time is also an international person having worked in Denmark and Norway and I enjoyed the conversation so much. There are things that only Japanese who lived abroad can talk and share... by having another perspective to things.
As we didn't have much foreigners on our islands we have a very unique 'common sense' that can be only shared among Japanese. And we can say we have a very rich culture for that and these things look mysterious or confusing to foreign visitors.
We went down to Maltby street, which she wanted and brought the area's business map. I was so happy to find there are more traders in further down.
The couple was surprised with the weather here. It is much more comfortable comparing to humid and hot rainy season in Japan but is very cold...

fresh almonds

OK this is something we unlikely to see in Japan.
I was told to eat the whole thing by a Turkish grocer. The taste reminds me of green ume (a kind of plum) but not much fruitiness. I wish to find other way to eat it... I'll try... chopping it into yoghurt.

easter

Hope you had a lovely Easter holiday!
I can't believe that we had to forward our clock to 'summertime' when it's so freezing cold...! This summer must get really hot to make it up!

kuri gohan {chestnut rice)

Breakfast, kuri gohan.
We cook rice with chestnut. Chestnut is autumn fruit in Japan, we usually have it in September, October. We make sweets, some dishes with it, and what I miss most is mont blanc: a cake using marron glace and cream. Once I tried to make it here using the French puree but it didn't taste the same. This is one of the things I miss a lot in Japan.

Thank you very much to everyone who made it to our Open Studio and the Advent fair at Steiner school. It was lovely to see you again!

cod in English style

Yesterday I got fish (cod and mackerel) from Bill who went for fishing on a boat in English channel. I made sabamiso with mackerel (for later) and baked cod in the oven with butter and herbs along with potatoes in duck fat.
This reminded me of food we had while travelling in the countryside. We went to pubs for dinner and the menu was pretty the same everywhere, which was a bit disappointing as I would like to have nice fresh seafood in the coast style when we're so close to the sea. (And in Japan most of the fishing village has local recipes for their specialty.)
But at the same time it wasn't hugely disappointing as I don't expect good food in the countryside here as I've never had a good one! Actually I felt OK with most of the food, whereas I used to dislike almost everything.
I wonder if the food in the countryside improved or a lot of walking helped!?!?
I got pebbles and washed glasses on beaches as souvenir. I'm hoping to make something with them.

summer holiday 2012 -2

After leaving Burley and then Sway, we went down south to Lymington to get a ferry to the Isle of Wight.
We took open air bus tour to Alum Bay and the Needles which is one of the touristic places on the island, then walked on coastal path to Freshwater.
Again it was a really lovely walk. Maybe it was about an hour (or more) walk, looking down the beautiful chalk cliff which has diagonal black lines, walking through a group of bulls and feeling the breeze from the sea.
The next day we started from Shanklin which is on the south west coast of the island. We walked to the next town Sandown along the shore. I really love those little huts on the beaches here. They are really pretty.
Taking a few buses we went to Arreton which is a small old village to buy some souvenirs and to Osbourne house which used to be Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's country family house. The house was filled with fine artefacts they loved and has a private beach where we could spend a whole day. Unfortunately we were running out of time and had to head off to Ryde to get a ferry back to the main island.

summer holiday 2012

I went out of London to the beautiful New Forest for my summer holiday. Three of us arrived at Brockenhurst and walked towards Burley which is in south-eastern part of the National park. We took old rail track which is now cycle path on the way and then footpath to the village.
When we were planning on the computer, the journey seemed OK. The distance between the two villages was about 8 km, 2 hour walk... Actually we walked more than 10 km, with everything on our backs, for about 5 hours with a few stops on the way. But it was really lovely walk.
And meeting wild horses is always refreshing. Every time we saw horses we couldn't help taking pictures... a gang of horses, pregnant ponies, a family of ponies, white horses, horses in the towns, ponies causing a traffic jam etc etc...
So the trail looks like this. bikers, dogs, deers, trained horses, wild horses and ponies with deer and rabbit's droppings (not in the picture but everywhere!)

まずはNew Forest。

all the little things

What a hectic week I had! I get busy once in a while but it wasn't like that. I had to move around for something I didn't expect to happen at all! I nearly missed the deadline for the show in Aberystwyth and didn't realise how hot and nice that day was...
I'm not going to the details as it would depress me but it's happened and I wonder how you process these things in your head. Do you believe in karma? Do you think these things are meant to happen? Do you regret things you didn't do to prevent it? How long ago do you go back in that case? And how do you come out of it??

Anyway, let's move onto something happier.
Yesterday, I went to see Grayson Perry's tapestries in Victoria Miro, which he explored with the channel 4 documentary series. The artist was the motivation that I started ceramics and his pots have been always inspiration for the fact that something can be more than something.
And happy coincidence! The gallery was having another show at the same time: the installation by Sarah Sze. I love her work, the delicacy of it, the colour and all the little things she makes. It reminds me that the universe is interconnecting in a very fragile balance.

...And I felt OK.

custard

This post is to let Japanese people know how much you love custard here. Please don't worry about what I'm writing in Japanese. I will share my version of rhubarb custard pie (not quite English!).
3 stalks of rhubarb cut into 2cm length, 100g sugar, 1 eggs plus 2 egg yorks, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 150ml single cream, 150g mascarpone, 1tbsp plain flour, crust or pie sheet. (plus what you need to make crumble and almond slices. I like adding ginger powder and/or cinnamon to crumble to give it a hint of flavours.)
Please just do what you do to make custard pies!

the queen's diamond jubilee

Here in the UK we're in the middle of the diamond jubilee weekend. It was a bit shame about the weather but the pageant on the Thames looked great in the screen. It was like a vessel museum on the river. It was spectacular.
In Japan it has been always a male Imperial family member who succeed to the throne. Recently we're having arguments if we should change the law and allow succession to female members also. I think it would be hard to understand for you having the Queen why that is even the issue. Apparently one of the reasons is to do with our native religion Shinto. Like some other religions there are things women shouldn't do (or, shouldn't be allowed to do).
Anyway I wondered what it would be like if our emperor made a pageant...

collect 2012

After so many unpleasant days, finally, it looks like we can enjoy the sun!? We went to Hampstead Heath which is my favourite park on a sunny day. To show it to our friend who'd never been there we walked in the park from south west end to Kenwood House and then down to Parliament Hill. It was a good walk. I had muscle pain on the next day. The park was very beautiful with young leaves and Azaleas. In Japan we eat buds from wild trees and wild grasses (of course the ones that tastes lovely) and I realised I have the Japanese tendency to look for it when looking greens.

Today I went to see Collect at Saatchi gallery. It was very inspirational to see such quality crafts. My best favourite was ceramics by Lut Laleman, an Belgium maker. She makes vessels from thin coils in porcelain which creates lovely patterns and textures. It is such a fine work with patience and delicate touching. The porcelain dries very quickly especially when it's so fine I wonder how she manages to make ones. Another favourite was vessels by Yoshiro Kimura. A Japanese gallery had two of his vases and the blue glaze on them was just gorgeous. It is a rare opportunity that we can see such lovely works so many at once. The show is on till Monday.

I love finding beautiful little streets.
