open studios

This weekend in London a lot of artists'/artisans' studios are open. I visited a couple of places: 'made in Clerkenwell' at craft central & Goldsmith centre and Chocolate factory. It is always inspiring to see others' studios even though they are set up for display. I love finding bits and bobs they are experimenting.

We usually have our open studio on the same weekends but this year it is on 13th Fri and 14th Sat December just because that's the weekend most of us can be at the studio. A good thing about changing the date is that I can go out to have a look at others' which I hardly could do in these years.

Don't you miss this opportunity if you're free today!

Akiko Hirai at Chocolate Factory. Every time I see her her work is evolving. A very inspiring and hard-working ceramicist I admire.

It was a lovely surprise to find Vic Lee's studio in clerkenwell. I love his prints of the streets in London. I've been always attempted to buy one of Columbia Road but now I found more appealing one: Broadway Market!!

The maker of fantastically surreal jewellery, Momoko of momocreatura was there in clerkenwell too! Her new pieces were cute and lovely but still have her style.

This is just a few picks of so many. This is why I love the city, there are so diverse and inspiring people everywhere...!

この時期になるとOpen Studioがいくつかあって、この週末はそのうちの二つを見に行ってきた。Open studioとは普段は作業場となっている作家さんのアトリエを一般公開すること。この人がこの作品を作っているの！？という意外な発見もありつつ、作家さんに直接会えたり、彼らの作業場を見る事は楽しい。

私たちもいつもはこの週末にしているのだけれども、皆の都合が合わず、今年は遅めに日時設定した。結果良かったのは、私が他のスタジオを見に行くことができること。久しぶりに陶芸作家、平井明子さんのスタジオ、Chocolate Factoryへ。彼女の作品はいつも挑戦、進歩していて尊敬する作家さんの一人。

プリントがかわいいなーと思っていたVic Leeさんのスタジオも発見。おしゃべりをしながら作業をしているその手元を見ると、なんと下書きもなくフリーハンド！作家は女性だと思っていたので、ロカビリー調の男子だったことにもびっくり。でも、そう見てみると、なるほど納得の作風。

そして、momocreaturaことモモコさんのジュエリー。怖いおとぎ噺に出てきそうなシュールな作品がとってもユニーク。「新しい作風にも挑戦してみた」と言いつつも、その名残りが決して消せてない感じを見て、笑ってしまった。これからの展開もまた楽しみ。

他にもいろんな所でスタジオ群にアクセスできるので、また違ったロンドンを楽しみたい人はこの時期に来るのも楽しいと思う。（でも、土地勘を養っておかないといろいろ回るのは大変かな？？）

You might have heard about Naoshima: an island where you can experience arts and the great architecture by Tadao Ando, but there are some more in a wider area. I was recommended to go to Teshima (the island next to Naoshima) but couldn't spare a day to take ferries (only four journeys a day from Takamatsu). If you like to check what's going on in the area you better have enough time!

(above) This is the ground floor of Kagawa prefecture office (in Takamatsu): the architect Kenzo Tange's early work built in the '50s, greatly inspired by Le Corbusier and in Japanese style. The wall piece is done by Genichiro Inokuma who was a local and international artist.

The artist's museum is in Marugame (30 mins away from Takamatsu): Mimoca. He always strived for the new expression throughout his life. You can see his paintings as well as a part of his belongings in their permanent collection. The current temporary exhibition was showing what stayed unchanged in his varied paintings. It was fun and very interesting. Their next exhibition is about a London artist: Francis Upritchard. The architect of the museum is Yoshio Taniguchi who also designed the extension of Moma in NY.

Mr Taniguchi also designed this one: Higashiyama Kaii Setouchi museum (sorry only in Japanese). Kaii originally was from Yokohama but had a strong connection with this district. Kaii was great at painting landscape especially using blues. 

And a sculptor-designer (and more) Isamu Noguchi. You can't really see anything but these two stones which are not his work. Over the stone wall there is his studios and house where he spent later of his life in a town where they produce quality stone. You can see his finished/unfinished work in the wall and the mountain disappearing on the background! He also designed a garden with stones next to his house with the seasonal trees: ume (plum tree?), sakura (cherry blossom), tsubaki (camellia) and momo (peach tree)... and it will be nice to visit in different seasons.

This art goes back a lot more. This was built in Kompira shrine complex (in Kotohira, Kagawa) in 17th century (the part at the back, on the left in the picture. the front was built more recent about 100 years ago?). It accommodates fine paintings by Okyo Maruyama from 18th century. They are drawn on the fusuma: sliding doors dividing the rooms. It might sound funny for you but our house used to be built very flexible with fusumas (because of the climate and the small land), and one room functioned as bedroom, dining room and guest room. If you like to make a bigger space for the guests you'd just get rid of these fusumas and join two rooms. Anyway that means the fusuma functioned as the wall which became a great canvas for the wealth to show their taste. So a lot of the old masterpieces were drawn on the fusuma and byobu (panels which also functioned as a room divider). Amazing!

香川のアートです。去年はTateに草間弥生の個展が回ってきた上に、某ブランドも彼女とコラボレートしたので、ロンドンでも彼女の認知度は一気に高まり、同時にかぼちゃのある直島のことも随分と知られるようになりました。直島や豊島の新しい美術館も気になるところではありましたが、限られた時間内にフェリーを使って動くのには問題があり、断念。今回は谷口吉生デザインの猪熊弦一郎(Mimoca)と東山魁夷の美術館、イサムノグチ庭園美術館と金毘羅宮に行ってきました。

Mimocaでは、猪熊弦一郎が変幻自在に表現を変えながらも、一貫して変化しなかった部分に焦点を当てた企画展があり、とても面白かったです。次の企画展はロンドンのアーティストFrancis Uprichardで、友人たちがデザインを担当しています。ロンドンの風を感じてみたい方は是非、お足を運んでみてください。

東山魁夷の美術館は年に4回、作品の入れ替えをしているようです。私が行った時は信州を描いたものと白い馬の現れる絵を集めたものが展示されていました。風景画と青色遣いを得意とした魁夷、美術館の目の前から本州に繋がる瀬戸大橋の色を決めたのも彼だそうです。タクシーの運転手さんは宇多津の塩業の話、埋め立て地（そして地震による液状化の心配）の話などをしてくれました。日本どこへいっても同じ問題がありますね。

イサムノグチの庭園美術館では、2つのスタジオと、完成、未完成の作品、晩年を過ごした家と庭園を見る事ができます。幾何学的な形を岩で作るという事に、意志を表現する魅力を感じたノグチの試行錯誤の様子を見ることができます。石の表情は変わりませんが、季節が変わったらまた違って見えると思います。見学には前もっての予約が必要。

そして、こんぴらさん。お参りはもちろん、表書院に寄っていきました。円山応挙らのふすま絵を見る事ができます。私が大学生の時、京都の国立博物館で盛大な応挙展がありました。あらゆる所からふすま絵、屏風絵、掛け軸、スケッチを集めた今でも忘れられない圧巻のもので、その時にこちらのふすま絵も見た覚えがあります。表書院では、ガラス障子越しにしか見ることができないので、あの時もっとしっかり見ておけば良かったと思いました。

また今年、瀬戸内芸術祭がありますね。島々のアートと共に、香川の美術に触れてみるのも良いと思いますよ。

wagashi: japanese sweets -1

Here is some of Japanese sweets I had so far.
I love azuki beans and sometimes buy boiled azuki in tin from Sainsbury and make 'anko': a paste made from the bean and sugar and tiny bit of salt. We use it in our sweets. In London I spread it on toast with butter. I know it's quite shocking for you to make the beans sweet, but please try if you like to taste a bit of Japan!
My anko paste is OK, I was quite happy with it most of the time, but once I have anko here I know it wasn't quite right. So I'm just ONLY trying to remind me what it should really taste like while I'm here!

滞在中は、イギリスで手に入らないものに自然と目がいってしまいます。
特に和菓子には目がないので、ほぼ凝視しています。イギリス生活も、最初は干菓子を持ち帰って満足していたのですが、ここ最近は、戻る直前に主菓子を買い、向こうに着くと同時に冷凍して、少しずつ頂きます。もちろん、風味は多少落ちてしまうけれども、向こうで食べることのありがたみと相殺して、大満足のひと時です。
そういえば、私のフラットには菓子皿がない、、、！今年の制作目標の一つです。

all the little things

What a hectic week I had! I get busy once in a while but it wasn't like that. I had to move around for something I didn't expect to happen at all! I nearly missed the deadline for the show in Aberystwyth and didn't realise how hot and nice that day was...
I'm not going to the details as it would depress me but it's happened and I wonder how you process these things in your head. Do you believe in karma? Do you think these things are meant to happen? Do you regret things you didn't do to prevent it? How long ago do you go back in that case? And how do you come out of it??

Anyway, let's move onto something happier. 
Yesterday, I went to see Grayson Perry's tapestries in Victoria Miro, which he explored with the channel 4 documentary series. The artist was the motivation that I started ceramics and his pots have been always inspiration for the fact that something can be more than something. 
And happy coincidence! The gallery was having another show at the same time: the installation by Sarah Sze. I love her work, the delicacy of it, the colour and all the little things she makes. It reminds me that the universe is interconnecting in a very fragile balance. 

...And I felt OK.

先週はてんてこ舞いの一週間でした。締切までに最後の焼きをしようと、器作りをしました。ぎりぎりセーフで出来上がった！と思えば、事件勃発。カメラが盗まれたのです。しかも、スタジオ内から。ホントに一瞬のことでした。
私が電話をかけなければ、、、と思いたって電話をかけている間、その瞬間をどうやって見計らう事ができたのか、私の頭にtune inしたとしか思えない事でした。ハックニーという土地柄、こういう事は日常茶飯事ですが、プロフェッショナルの技、嗅覚を思い知らされたようでした。
自分の不注意に落ち込んだ私でしたが、カメラは元彼から値切って買った、ある意味思い出のあるものだったので、そういう部分を断ち切ってもらったのかなーとも思います。皆さんはこういう時、どういう風に気持ちを処理するものかしら？母はいつも、「生きているんだから。」と言ってくれたものでした。

昨日、Grayson Perryのタペストリーを見に、Victoria Miroに行きました。そこで、Sarah Szeのインスタレーションを見つけて幸せでした。彼女の作品は、とても精巧なバランスで作られている宇宙を思わせてくれて、自分の小ささと大切さを感じさせてくれるからです。4年前の同じギャラリーでのインスタレーションと比べると小さめでしたが、それでも、どうやって作ったのか、、と思うと途方もない仕事で、彼女の繊細さと遊び心も感じられるきれいな作品でした。

It is nice always when I feel spring. When I see more squirrels, tiny leaves in a tree and spring flowers.
It was a beautiful day today. I started off with yoga session and then went to a bike shop to pick up my mine. It needed a lot of TLC and came back with a new basket in front. Now I can carry more food!

Then I went to see Ceramic Art London. My new discovery was Stephanie Quayle.  Her animal sculpture is like 3D drawing with strong brush strokes. So confident with clay. I really admire her work.
Although, my favourite in the show was Susan O'Byrne still. She has more of small sculptures this year and more patterns on the surface, which made her sculpture more attractive. I wish I could have one of her work someday...
It was a really inspiring and encouraging show as I also met some people I know (not only in exhibitors but in visitors as well) and had a lovely chat. 
I really hope something comes out from what I've been experimenting in the studio! 

ロンドンも徐々に春の気候です。リスやクロッカス、木々の中の小さな葉っぱを見つけたりすると特に春を感じます。
今日はまたとてもいい天気の一日でした。朝のヨガの後、メンテナンスに出していた自転車を受け取りに行きました。購入してから2年半ほど経つでしょうか、最近、前輪がぐらぐらしていたのです。しっかりいろいろなところを直してもらい、前にカゴもつけてもらいました。これで、買い出しももうちょっと楽になるかな？
午後はCeramic Art Londonという陶芸作家さんたちの展示会を見に行きました。一堂にいろんな人の作品を見れるので、本当に楽しいです。いつもヒントになるようなものはあるかな？と意気込んで出かけるのですが、結局はほぼお客さん目線で、かわいいとか、部屋に飾れたらいいな、、、などと思って見ています。
私も一応、陶芸界の末席を汚しているので、こういう会場では知り合いに会ってしまうのです。いろいろ話をし、活力をもらい、楽しかったです。私もスタジオで試している事がいろいろあるのですが、それらが、もっといい形でまとまるといいな、と思います。
