outing after Christmas (making) maddness!

Momosan shop, picture taken by Moritz Steiger

Phew... last week I had the last firing of this year. All the rest of Christmas orders was in it and I was very nervous if anything goes wrong. Surprisingly the result was one of the most successful ones and I was so relieved.
So this week I was running around to deliver and send them off. Also finally after 3 months of intensive making I managed to get out of the studio in Hackney and saw some nice things!

graphicsrca: fifty years. It's showing the work of their graphic design graduates since they set up the course. Some people might spot famous designers now but I couldn't tell anybody but a few friends... Instead, I found a few pieces I loved, which was one of the typography experiments. It really made me want to do more experiment in my work! The exhibition finishes soon so please don't miss it.
And Julio Le Parc at Serpentine Sackler gallery. His work might not be strikingly new nor complex but it's very enjoyable. Basically it's kinetic work using light, so movement, reflection and sound materials make is the big part of the work. For me the methodical drawings at the back was very inspiring. I should go back to drawings!

And, still (since summer) a part of the shop attached to the gallery is Momosan shop who recently moved her base from Kingsland road to our neighbourhood. The new Momosan shop is in Wilton Way and looks even greater with more exciting stuff. I love hearing her story where she's found these beautiful objects.
In the same street there is another beautiful shop J.Glinert, and farther down Violet: the cake shop. The street has become a lot prettier.

Hope you're enjoying Chritsmas shopping rather than being stressed out!

Another Ceramics in the City - Design Festival 14

Yesterday I went to see one of the design districts, Shoreditch Design Triangle. This year it looks even more interesting with many more shops/galleries opening their doors.
SCP, one of my favourite shops. They were showing some new collections. One of these is Mashiko pottery that has come to London a few times now. This time in this shop they seem to have different shapes, maybe more suitable for food style here.
In the same shop another collection by a very talented designer Reiko Kaneko who's now based in Stoke-On-Trent. VERY beautiful terracotta tableware with a careful attention to details, earthy but modern. Although, personally I have a problem with unglazed surface for functional ware when it's low-fired. It's more porous and hard to keep it clean hygienically and cosmetically.
This is very jolly collection of vases by Bethan Laura Wood Alter, Max Lamb, Martino Gamper and somebody (! Sorry I couldn't remember his/her name, but makes beautiful milkshake glaze! I will edit here as soon as I find out his name!) at Ace Hotel. I loved how they're displayed with flowers and, really, their playfulness as one and as a group.
These plant pots are not just for the festival. They are in their bar. I just love the way they go so well with the plants and how they are hang.
And Studio Potapota for Aesop. The ceramics is made by a Japanese duo Hidekazu & Kaori Sogabe. Interesting...
Luna & Curious. They transformed a part of their shop to a ceramic studio with a table to make your ceramics with an extruder to play with. If you like to try out some ceramic technique you better pop in there.
In another favourite shop: Choosing Keeping is the show of two artists. The ceramic work is by Morgan Peck. Another artist is David Bachelor. The collection that is quiet but fun goes so well with the stationery Julia has chosen from all over the world. It's such a beautiful space! Please don't miss this!

As you can see, you have a VERY GOOD reason to come to East this weekend. Please don't miss Ceramics in the City at Geffrye Museum. Open Fri - Sun 10am-5pm. Late Event is on Thu 6pm - 8:30pm! See you there!

design festival 14

On Saturday when I was working in the studio my studio mate popped in and reminded me that Design Festival had started. Oh no! I had almost none information what's happening where apart from the major shows. As this is the most exciting time of the year I get to see a lot of nice things in the city, I don't want to miss them just because I'm preparing for my show.
So V&A. I loved the Wish List. It's a collection of objects that 10 design specialists commissioned 10 craftsmen/designers to make the one-off pieces that they dreamt of having. It's so sweet because it shows their personalities and the stories in their making. It's just simply a VERY lovely project.
And the Open Studio of their resident ceramicist Nao Matsuyama. It's always nice to see the artists' working studios, to see the tiny bits of experiments and their drawings, pieces of their inspiration.
Also another exhibition in the museum: Disobedient Object. The objects that were used in protests and that were made/chosen to protest something. It's interesting when a shape or a foam becomes to symbolise something, even more when the message is strong. The show was compact but it made me think A LOT.

I also headed down to Ealing to see Crafting Narrative. The show has a group of objects that their designers/makers try to tell their story through. It took me a while to understand some of the stories, but it was interesting to see different approaches they took. I also loved their playful display.

And a pop-up shop Hay Mini Market. I adore their beautiful glazes on the pots and cones. Seeing nice glazes always makes me want to explore more in my work too. I also loved their stationery: wooden rulers, towers of memo pads and notebooks. The only concern is that they are just too good to have in my muddy studio!

crystal lemon cucumber

I tried this cuke for the first time. It's one of the things I started noticing recently. This year they seem to be everywhere, so I gave it a go! Simple salad with kohlrabi, just sliced vegs with olive oil, lemon and wine vinegar.

open studios

This weekend in London a lot of artists'/artisans' studios are open. I visited a couple of places: 'made in Clerkenwell' at craft central & Goldsmith centre and Chocolate factory. It is always inspiring to see others' studios even though they are set up for display. I love finding bits and bobs they are experimenting.
Love this beautiful desk space!
We usually have our open studio on the same weekends but this year it is on 13th Fri and 14th Sat December just because that's the weekend most of us can be at the studio. A good thing about changing the date is that I can go out to have a look at others' which I hardly could do in these years.
Don't you miss this opportunity if you're free today!
Akiko Hirai at Chocolate Factory. Every time I see her her work is evolving. A very inspiring and hard-working ceramicist I admire.
It was a lovely surprise to find Vic Lee's studio in clerkenwell. I love his prints of the streets in London. I've been always attempted to buy one of Columbia Road but now I found more appealing one: Broadway Market!!
The maker of fantastically surreal jewellery, Momoko of momocreatura was there in clerkenwell too! Her new pieces were cute and lovely but still have her style.
This is just a few picks of so many. This is why I love the city, there are so diverse and inspiring people everywhere...!

bumbu gado gado

Today's summer noodle dinner: Bumbu gado gado (-ish) & Vietnamese noodle.
I found this sauce in a spice shop. It was a very small shop but he had a huge variety of spices & spice mixes from all over the world. I wanted to try everything that I've never heard but there was so much!
One of the spice mixes I tried was this Bumbu gado gado, an Indonesian sauce, just because I loved the sound of it. But when I tasted it in the shop I loved it even more. It was sweet and salty that reminded me of sesame sauce we have in Japan.
What you taste mainly is peanut, sugar, coconut and some spices and saltiness. The shop owner told me that they mix it with steamed/raw vegetables and also recommended me to have it with rice.
I just improvised it into the cold noodle dish with Dongpo pork in Japanese style. Obviously it's not Indonesian cuisine anymore but... yum! Happy Sunday!

winchcombe pottery

Skipping about a day plus in Bath, on the way back to London we visited Winchcombe pottery just outside of the Cotswolds town. This is one of the places related to Japanese Mingei movement.
The workshop has been on the site since the early 1800's but was derelict after the war. Then Michael Cardew who was trained under Bernard Leach got the place and gradually the team grew in the number. They practised the philosophy of Mingei which was to make affordable hand-made pottery for everyday use and in old English syle Cardew was looking at.
One of the crew Ray Finch was left with the place when Cardew took off for travelling. Now his son Mike took over the workshop and has been making beautiful domestic tableware.
Mike was a very lovely guy and told us the history and the stories behind making, and showed us around in the studio.
This old-fashioned machine would be used in a bakery factory to make dough. Now in their studio it's mixing clays.
This is a hand-build down draught wood-firing kiln. These things really make me feel like I'm very amateur. They also have a non-working bottle kiln in the site which is worth seeing.
I really love the earthy feel of their pottery. I got a casserole pot from a 'seconds' shelf. Great buy. I'm looking forward to winter now even though I'm also enjoying the unbelievably summery sunny weather at the moment.

crop circles in wiltshire

From tuesday this week when it's so sunny and hot we travelled to Bath through Wiltshire and back through Gloucestershire. I discovered other sides of this country. It was so fun!
With my ankle flown into London on the way to Amsterdam, we drove to the first destination Crop circle information centre. He's had a strong passion to study and introduce mysteries especially about the UFO-related stuff alongside his main job as a professor. As he reached the retirement age he now has plenty of time to concentrate on his life-long interest.
So one of the very few things he wanted to see in this country was crop circles. I came forward as a navigator and also took my friend who's been staying here as a tourist.
On that day there were 2 circles that can be accessed. The first one was newly made a few days before rather roughly. There were a few people investigating the circle and gave us useful tips (?) such as the very middle of the circle is a power spot. I found a few coins and a banana on the spot, so left my 5p too. One woman said she came from America and was measuring the size. One guy said he feels power from the middle.
There was a van parked near the site and a girl was reading a book in the shadow of the vehicle. She said she believes those circles are 80% made by a higher intelligence but wasn't giving much information except that. Apparently she works with the farmers and was taking a few pounds off the visitors to the site.
We couldn't find the second one as it had been made a while before and had almost disappeared.
Personally I don't care about these circles but it was great to experience walking through the field of rye, barley or wheat!

canal in london

Finally summer seems to be here after such a long unsettled weather. Hope we'll have more days like this.
I spent the lovely Saturday evening on a boat on the canal. The boat which is bigger than a narrow boat was originally redone to create a gallery space, so it's got a huge blank space inside that can host 100 people.
We started from Old Ford Lock which is on the west side of Victoria Park and sailed down east along the park to the River Lea Navigation and up to Springfield park on the River Lea. There are 3 locks on the journey and it was so great to experience opening a lock!
Some of us sat on the roof and we had to lie down on the belly every time we pass under the bridges. We don't have this kind of canal in Japan and I really enjoyed the whole experience and the sun!!

festival des métiers

Another thing I went out to see was the exhibition of craftwork at Hermès. It is always encouraging to see artisan doing great work. The show was being held in two rooms on the first floor of Saatchi gallery. They were showing hand craft in the production of scarf, knit, bag, watch, jewels, tie and china painting. You would understand their price maybe if you've seen their work at a high standard but what I loved most was their love towards the tools also in a very high standard.
(Picture above) A part of some scarves is textured by chopping yarn in the top layer.
Apparently it takes between a few days to a week to finish this process of one depending on the design. All the processes before this in scarf production is also labour-intensive.
Do you see the tailored crocodile leather handles on these tools..? And the bit at the end of the scale? So beautiful.
Another very beautiful thing, a crocodile cover.
We in Japan also use bamboo mats to keep brushes in order but without the pockets like this. This is really sweet. These things really make me feel like organising my studio space better. It will definitely change the mood in making!
Very intricate work in watch making. You can't even see small parts in the picture.
The artisans showed and explained us their great skill, and answered our questions openly. I loved it because I could see their passion and pride in their skill of making. Isn't it obvious that craft is definitely vital to their creativity? (Please click this to see what the UK government thinks of it?)

clerkenwell design week

This week I went down to check what's happening in Clerkenwell Design week. It is a great opportunity to visit the showrooms in the area to check their products and also to catch up with the new design movements. Although, I'm not so knowledgeable of furniture: its ergonomics, materials and production process. So these are favourites entirely picked by my taste!
I loved this fabric designed by Virginia White for A.T Cronin Workshop for its naive drawing with beautiful colours.
I loved the idea of this lamp: the way the natural material is used and the pattern and the shadow it creates... It was very different from his other products that are very controlled in the shape. I wonder if this is a new direction or just an experimental? I'm looking forward to see future work by James Smith.
It is really hard for any designs to beat such lovely creature. In the middle of the shows I found lamb, one wearing jumper. So sweet. Without their quality wool some well-designed furniture cannot be realised.
Another favourite is handwoven grass baskets from Swaziland. Its one example of upcycling using fabric waste from the local manufactures. The design and the colours are quite striking for me but I love the idea.
Any exposure is great! Thank you so much Homes and Gardens!

looking back at Japan when in London

As I'm living abroad I get asked (I also ask myself) what is my Japanese-ness and find myself with lots of questions. I think this happens to us when we put ourselves out of our original context however further or not. Every time I come back to Japan I find what I've been missing in London and appreciate them more. On the other hand I feel weird about things that I'd never thought of before coming to London.
Here I will put some shots from my stay. These are things I feel good about my country. Maybe it's better to leave them without much captions.

(above) a bench on a train platform in Takamatsu.
pricey antiques in Sunday street Market, Kochi.
an elderly on the weekend.
an elderly at work in Hasami.
primary school students commuting on their own. (this is possible only in the countryside now...)
Kumamon: a very popular mascot character of Kumamoto prefecture.

and more potters, more pots

Nakasen gama in Arita. There are some galleries also on the other side of the station. I popped in one and a man kindly showed me their studios too! They do another kind of pottery: pots as art in Japan. This picture is too bad to show what they are but he (they are three artists making their own work) throws on the wheel and makes linear marks with a cutter on the surface. And he put coloured slip in the thin grooves and makes geometric patterns. Next to them there are a few pots by his son who throws basic shape and manipulates it. In the other studio on the premise the other artist makes print with paper. He creates amazing patterns by layering prints. All the process they use needs to be carefully planned and done and is very time-consuming.
Please check the links and how skilled they are. They are just a few of many superb artists Arita brought up in its history.
Matsubara kobo in Hasami. They are a unit of two girls who have heavily trained skills and make cute tableware in porcelain. Their shop has got really lovely atmosphere like their cups and bowls. They are a bit away from anywhere else but will have a new shop-studio in town soon.
Fumio Matsutani in Tobe. I caught him when he was having a meeting with his friend potters. I was so confused about where to visit as there are so many potteries in the area. And he kindly offered to show me around. He's got his own studio in the family business. These are porcelain vase thrown and manipulated. But apparently he uses stoneware more. They were very beautiful and would be so after firings...!

more potters, more pots

So that's all pottery village/towns I visited during the trip. It was really great to see the geographic features, talk with the local people and learn the history behind their making. And of course there are a lot of ceramicists in these areas too. Some work in the context of the local pottery and some work with their own preferences in styles, techniques and materials. Here are a few of those I met.
First, Ao san, Mr Yoshimura in Hasami. He has his own company producing tableware and himself is a maker and designer too. He throws on the wheel and the design he thinks good goes to batch production. I was so happy to know that Mt Fuji sake cup that I had my eyes on in Nishiki market Kyoto has been made here. The bowl in the picture was made with porcelain clay mixed with old fired porcelain bits from the aged kilns in the town. You can't really see it in the picture but it gives lovely texture to the surface. If you imagine the tiny bits can be from 400 years ago...!? Very romantic. He took me in his business meeting (somehow!) and gave me a great opportunity to have insight to Hasami.
Norio Nakagawa in Hasami. In Nakao mountain he makes slipware while the people around working in porcelain! He was trained in Mashiko, Tochigi which is another pottery town that has a strong connection with the folk crafts movement in the '50s. He was there for 8 years and continues it in his hometown. He was lovely but a bit cynical that made me laugh. When I told him that I'm living in the UK he brought a magazine featuring St Ives and Bernard Leach telling he's wanting to go. It was a huge feature but he asked if Leach's that big in the UK. It's true Leach's much more well known in Japan.
Takeryo Kawaguchi in Arita. I fell in love with his work in Kumamoto and sent him email wanting to see more. He managed to make some time before I left Arita. I would have had all if I was travelling by car!
His work is so honest and sincere like he is. He was born in the middle of porcelain and studied in porcelain and trained under masters in Iga and Shizuoka, and found he prefers rougher clay. He mixes stones and iron pieces into clay and does Kohiki (white slip on the surface), which gives rustic feel. These are from a series using decorating technique called Mishima which originally came from Korea in 14th century and we usually do it with smoother clay. During a chat I found out that using slip on greenware can be very tricky in Japan because of the humidity. It has to be the right weather and temperature and the clay has to be the right condition to do it. It requires a good skill and intuition. Very beautifully made... Just love it.
