Thank you so much to those who came to see me at Ceramics in the City. It was a great weekend for me, seeing a lovely audience who is knowledgeable and appreciates what we do and spending a weekend in the lovely venue.
Also I felt so honoured to be among the talented makers and had a good chance to speak with them. I learnt so much about their practice and ceramic terms.
I swapped work with a few of other exhibitors as a remembrance, and one of these was Hannah McAndrew who makes beautiful English slipware. Something about her work made me feel home, and I fell in love with a particular one that had a simpler slip decoration.
The great thing about having a good pottery is to make you think what to cook and how to use it. Since I got this I've been thinking all sorts of dishes. Yesterday finally I spent some good amount of time in the kitchen cooking and enjoyed the dish. It's one of the happiest moments. Thank you, Hannah.

open studios
This weekend in London a lot of artists'/artisans' studios are open. I visited a couple of places: 'made in Clerkenwell' at craft central & Goldsmith centre and Chocolate factory. It is always inspiring to see others' studios even though they are set up for display. I love finding bits and bobs they are experimenting.
Love this beautiful desk space!
We usually have our open studio on the same weekends but this year it is on 13th Fri and 14th Sat December just because that's the weekend most of us can be at the studio. A good thing about changing the date is that I can go out to have a look at others' which I hardly could do in these years.
Don't you miss this opportunity if you're free today!
Akiko Hirai at Chocolate Factory. Every time I see her her work is evolving. A very inspiring and hard-working ceramicist I admire.
It was a lovely surprise to find Vic Lee's studio in clerkenwell. I love his prints of the streets in London. I've been always attempted to buy one of Columbia Road but now I found more appealing one: Broadway Market!!
The maker of fantastically surreal jewellery, Momoko of momocreatura was there in clerkenwell too! Her new pieces were cute and lovely but still have her style.
This is just a few picks of so many. This is why I love the city, there are so diverse and inspiring people everywhere...!

my last week
Last week in London was exciting with Design Festival and Open House weekend happening at the same time. It was nice to be out of the studio (especially to West London I hardly go.) and see some nice stuff!
Here are my favourite findings:
A lovely new shop The Garage. I love their taste, well-handmade objects and the space itself! It's only a temporary place until Christmas, so make a visit while they're still there.
Ed's shed in East London. This is a house for a family of a couple and their little one, designed by David Adjaye, and I'd been wondering what it's like inside this black cube. Finally I could get in this occasion and I was surprised to find its small windows actually open. I loved the lovely view of their neightbours' garden and trees through the huge window on the top floor and the clever system to hide cocktail bar and work space, but was not impressed with the shadowy kitchen downstairs.
The structure is timber panel. The same is this one:
52 Whitmore Road. This building was on the way to my daily exercise routine last summer and its construction was on hold for a while with just concrete base. When I was wondering what's happening, suddenly it's got piles of huge timber panels next to it and went up so quickly. For me it was the first time to see this kind of building construction, I was fascinated by it.
When I saw the huge space inside I couldn't just get my head around it. How can they support this space without columns? They've got 3 more stories above. Apparently this timber panel building technique was invented in Austria and it's more sustainable than using concrete and steel which produces tons of carbon dioxide in the process.
And 'gap house' just off Westbourne grove. The facade is very narrow being between two houses but it's wider in the back. There used to be a garage house which came with the garden. I really loved the fact the house was built with well-thought-through to feel spacious in a small lot and to maximise the use of sunlight and to save energy.
It was a lovely weekend to see such beautiful houses full of ideas but also to meet people who shares the same interest in the queues!

winchcombe pottery
Skipping about a day plus in Bath, on the way back to London we visited Winchcombe pottery just outside of the Cotswolds town. This is one of the places related to Japanese Mingei movement.
The workshop has been on the site since the early 1800's but was derelict after the war. Then Michael Cardew who was trained under Bernard Leach got the place and gradually the team grew in the number. They practised the philosophy of Mingei which was to make affordable hand-made pottery for everyday use and in old English syle Cardew was looking at.
One of the crew Ray Finch was left with the place when Cardew took off for travelling. Now his son Mike took over the workshop and has been making beautiful domestic tableware.
Mike was a very lovely guy and told us the history and the stories behind making, and showed us around in the studio.
This old-fashioned machine would be used in a bakery factory to make dough. Now in their studio it's mixing clays.
This is a hand-build down draught wood-firing kiln. These things really make me feel like I'm very amateur. They also have a non-working bottle kiln in the site which is worth seeing.
I really love the earthy feel of their pottery. I got a casserole pot from a 'seconds' shelf. Great buy. I'm looking forward to winter now even though I'm also enjoying the unbelievably summery sunny weather at the moment.

clerkenwell design week
This week I went down to check what's happening in Clerkenwell Design week. It is a great opportunity to visit the showrooms in the area to check their products and also to catch up with the new design movements. Although, I'm not so knowledgeable of furniture: its ergonomics, materials and production process. So these are favourites entirely picked by my taste!
I loved this fabric designed by Virginia White for A.T Cronin Workshop for its naive drawing with beautiful colours.
I loved the idea of this lamp: the way the natural material is used and the pattern and the shadow it creates... It was very different from his other products that are very controlled in the shape. I wonder if this is a new direction or just an experimental? I'm looking forward to see future work by James Smith.
It is really hard for any designs to beat such lovely creature. In the middle of the shows I found lamb, one wearing jumper. So sweet. Without their quality wool some well-designed furniture cannot be realised.
Another favourite is handwoven grass baskets from Swaziland. Its one example of upcycling using fabric waste from the local manufactures. The design and the colours are quite striking for me but I love the idea.
Any exposure is great! Thank you so much Homes and Gardens!

unbelievable weather in london and white choc bite
It's been so so cold in the UK. We had snow in London last week and the cold weather has been staying now for 2 weeks and more. Meanwhile it's got a lot warmer in Japan and they're having sakura blossom season a week earlier than usual...
Oh well..., at least I've got a handsome blue bird bringing joy into my place. Lovely work by a Japanese ceramicist Taichi Abe.
At home I'm tying to perfect a matcha bownie. As green tea powder is running out before I get the texture right, I tried it with rum and raison instead. It was failure as brownie but I've got a lovely cake!
Please try: 150 unsalted butter, 200g white chocolate, 2 large eggs, 2 heap spoons of raisin and rum enough to soak, 80g plain flour.
Soak raisin in rum until raisin get softer. Melt butter and chocolate in separate bowls. Add tiny bit of salt into butter and stir until it gets whiter, then add melted chocolate into it. Whisk eggs in another bowl and pour it into the mix then stir sieved flour and rum& raisin into it.
Pour the mix into brownie tray and bake it at 170 degree for 40 mins.

and more potters, more pots
Nakasen gama in Arita. There are some galleries also on the other side of the station. I popped in one and a man kindly showed me their studios too! They do another kind of pottery: pots as art in Japan. This picture is too bad to show what they are but he (they are three artists making their own work) throws on the wheel and makes linear marks with a cutter on the surface. And he put coloured slip in the thin grooves and makes geometric patterns. Next to them there are a few pots by his son who throws basic shape and manipulates it. In the other studio on the premise the other artist makes print with paper. He creates amazing patterns by layering prints. All the process they use needs to be carefully planned and done and is very time-consuming.
Please check the links and how skilled they are. They are just a few of many superb artists Arita brought up in its history.
Matsubara kobo in Hasami. They are a unit of two girls who have heavily trained skills and make cute tableware in porcelain. Their shop has got really lovely atmosphere like their cups and bowls. They are a bit away from anywhere else but will have a new shop-studio in town soon.
Fumio Matsutani in Tobe. I caught him when he was having a meeting with his friend potters. I was so confused about where to visit as there are so many potteries in the area. And he kindly offered to show me around. He's got his own studio in the family business. These are porcelain vase thrown and manipulated. But apparently he uses stoneware more. They were very beautiful and would be so after firings...!

more potters, more pots
So that's all pottery village/towns I visited during the trip. It was really great to see the geographic features, talk with the local people and learn the history behind their making. And of course there are a lot of ceramicists in these areas too. Some work in the context of the local pottery and some work with their own preferences in styles, techniques and materials. Here are a few of those I met.
First, Ao san, Mr Yoshimura in Hasami. He has his own company producing tableware and himself is a maker and designer too. He throws on the wheel and the design he thinks good goes to batch production. I was so happy to know that Mt Fuji sake cup that I had my eyes on in Nishiki market Kyoto has been made here. The bowl in the picture was made with porcelain clay mixed with old fired porcelain bits from the aged kilns in the town. You can't really see it in the picture but it gives lovely texture to the surface. If you imagine the tiny bits can be from 400 years ago...!? Very romantic. He took me in his business meeting (somehow!) and gave me a great opportunity to have insight to Hasami.
Norio Nakagawa in Hasami. In Nakao mountain he makes slipware while the people around working in porcelain! He was trained in Mashiko, Tochigi which is another pottery town that has a strong connection with the folk crafts movement in the '50s. He was there for 8 years and continues it in his hometown. He was lovely but a bit cynical that made me laugh. When I told him that I'm living in the UK he brought a magazine featuring St Ives and Bernard Leach telling he's wanting to go. It was a huge feature but he asked if Leach's that big in the UK. It's true Leach's much more well known in Japan.
Takeryo Kawaguchi in Arita. I fell in love with his work in Kumamoto and sent him email wanting to see more. He managed to make some time before I left Arita. I would have had all if I was travelling by car! His work is so honest and sincere like he is. He was born in the middle of porcelain and studied in porcelain and trained under masters in Iga and Shizuoka, and found he prefers rougher clay. He mixes stones and iron pieces into clay and does Kohiki (white slip on the surface), which gives rustic feel. These are from a series using decorating technique called Mishima which originally came from Korea in 14th century and we usually do it with smoother clay. During a chat I found out that using slip on greenware can be very tricky in Japan because of the humidity. It has to be the right weather and temperature and the clay has to be the right condition to do it. It requires a good skill and intuition. Very beautifully made... Just love it.

iga & shigaraki pottery
Today I visited a few pottery places.
Iga pottery has been famous for producing donabe pot. In cooking donabe has to stand for the heat. The clay in Iga area has the perfect property for this. It is rough and has a lot of impurities which becomes aerated body in the firing.
The village was really beautiful and peaceful with some chimneys sticking out from random houses and old-fashioned factories.
My family has been using donabes from here and I've been missing it a lot in London. I've been thinking of getting smaller one to take back to London but it's not easy...
The old recipe books were shown in a museum, all natural ingredients. In the page I can read straw ashes, wood ashes and some kind of stones, nothing is in chemical form... wow..!
The next to Iga was Shigaraki. This is one of big pottery areas in Japan. They have a long history since 8th century. The area has been producing pots and jugs as well as racoon sculptures which they can be more famous for. If you see a ceramic racoon sculpture with a sake bottle in his hand, it is likely to be made in this area.
The bottles in the picture are old sake containers. We used to have one at least at home and would go to sake brewery/shop and ask top-up in our own bottle. That's why these bottles have the names of their owners (some are with their address). It was a common practise a long time ago, and, I think, would be a beautiful lifestyle if we still had it now.

wagashi: japanese sweets -1
Here is some of Japanese sweets I had so far.
I love azuki beans and sometimes buy boiled azuki in tin from Sainsbury and make 'anko': a paste made from the bean and sugar and tiny bit of salt. We use it in our sweets. In London I spread it on toast with butter. I know it's quite shocking for you to make the beans sweet, but please try if you like to taste a bit of Japan!
My anko paste is OK, I was quite happy with it most of the time, but once I have anko here I know it wasn't quite right. So I'm just ONLY trying to remind me what it should really taste like while I'm here!

nerikiri
Happy New Year from Japan!
It is really lovely to be here for this time of the year. The new year day is more atmospheric here. There are a lot to do to celebrate the day. Cleaning the house, having soba noodle near midnight before the date and making osechi, writing the new year greetings, visiting shrines and temples etc etc...
Anyway basically the first three days are holiday here and this year the 4th was Friday and soon came a weekend. So a lot of people seem to have had a long holiday. I also could meet up friends in Kyoto.
(more about the trip follows soon in another topic.)
This time in the city we tried making nerikiri, a kind of Japanese sweets for tea. A confectionery is giving lessons and we joined one.
We used a few kinds of paste made from beans, rice or potato etc and made a few shapes representing the season. This time of the year it was botan (a kind of peony), matsu (pine tree) and aioi (celebrating colour combination of red and white). It was a bit like using soft clay but much more difficult as it's not plastic like clay and you have to handle the material that doesn't harden but you don't want your finger print on it.
We managed to make 4 pieces being rather slow and had it with matcha! It was really fun and I now appreciate the craft skill in it more.

a lovely new shop on columbia road
On the way to Maltby street I found a new shop on Columbia road: Choosing keeping. It is a very beautiful stationery shop. Julia the owner choose these lovely and quality products from all around the world. (And a lot from Japan too!) Notebooks, pens, erasers, pencil sharpeners (and leather pencil sharpner case!), books and clips... She is very knowledgeable about the stationery and could tell so much about their history. If you like to work with beautiful products, this is the place to go to find one.
This shop also reminded me of my school memory. I loved imported stationery as they looked pretty to me. I used to use thick 'mead' notebook which was divided into 4 or 5 sections with indexes and not in A4 or B4. (In Japan B4 is very common size for school notebook.) Sometimes the teachers collected our notebooks to see if we'd done homework and that's when I had a problem. I couldn't use that notebook for other subjects.
Once I wanted to have only blues in my pen case. As a student you would have to have a red pen to mark texts etc but I didn't like to have one. I was in dilemma... What I did to solve the problem was to paint blue on the outside of red ink tube. None of my friends could tell that was red not blue. I don't know why I was so obsessed then. That was my blue period...
Now we have so much well-designed stationery in Japan and I wish I was a student now!

design festival 2012
My picks of the week: (there's no order.)
1. baskets from Zimbabwe. They reminded me of fundamental creative thinking: to make most of what's available to solve problems. I loved it for its crude look too.
2. resident artist Michelle Erickson open studio @V&A. She has been blogging about her project. It is quite interesting the way she incorporates old techniques and styles into her ceramics to make narrative with social issues.
3. Jasper Morrison with Oigen. He designed cast-iron wares with Japanese Nanbu tekki craft manufacturer. Nanbu is the area in Tohoku traditionally famous for iron-casting industry but they have been supplying mainly domestic (apart from Sori Yanagi's sauce pans?). Jasper designed products for international use.
4. Donna Wilson's rug at SCP. It's got knitting pattern you might not be able to see in the picture. It's so pretty.
5. rugs by Chris Haughton & Made by node at Tent. Initially Chris has re-set up a direct relationship with fair trade groups in Nepal. He made rugs, toys with those groups who are funding orphanages, schools and women who need supports. And then he found some designers who also want to make their own rugs. They had a bit of preview of what are being produced at the moment in Nepal for the show in Design Museum in the very near future. Beautifully hand-made rugs in beautifully designed project.
6. Momosan shop and Rupert Blanchard. The beautiful shop had a special display of artists' work themed with hexagon. And it is always pleasure to find hidden studio in the local area. Behind the shop is a studio of Rupert Blanchard who makes lovely furniture from bits and pieces he finds in the markets. He was showing a set of new sofa which is sturdy and yet very comfortable.
7. Nicola Tassie at Margaret Howell. Nicola's pots are beautifully in harmony with the clothing collection in the shop. Although she doesn't see herself as a designer, there is huge element of designing in her pots. Would you call it unconscious design?
8. Sutton House. The oldest house in Hackney built in 1535. The house has original feature from Tudor period as well as Georgian.
9. 2 Willow road designed by Erno Goldfinger. A home built by the modernist architect in 1939. Brick surface is not so modernism as his original plan was rejected from the council at that time. Yet I could see its concrete frame gave huge possibilities to design new house. (especially after seeing Sutton house!)
10. olive roll from nude espresso. It's nothing to do with design but I enjoyed it with lovely surprise. It's like raisin roll but with black olive, spring onion, courgette, corn meal. It was just so delish!

sweet william
It makes me feel excited when I find things changed for the Olympics. In the city we have the Olympic Symbols on bus lanes, 'London 2012' flags, the union jack and 'team GB' products everywhere! Although I'm not a big fan of any sports, I will watch some at Live Sites definitely. I'll be happy to feel that the Games is happening at the same time in BST.
The sports I enjoy watching is any kind of gymnastics, synchronised swimming, diving... sports that compete the beauty. When the athletes show such skilled movements beautifully and seemingly effortlessly (and in sync), it makes me Wow!
What I'm most looking forward to watching this time is dressage. The sport is less popular than other sports in Japan (we never got medals?) and I'd hardly watched it broadcasted on telly. Now I'm here hoping the situation would be different.
I hope it's gonna be lovely summer at least to enjoy these games! 10 days to go.

all the little things
What a hectic week I had! I get busy once in a while but it wasn't like that. I had to move around for something I didn't expect to happen at all! I nearly missed the deadline for the show in Aberystwyth and didn't realise how hot and nice that day was...
I'm not going to the details as it would depress me but it's happened and I wonder how you process these things in your head. Do you believe in karma? Do you think these things are meant to happen? Do you regret things you didn't do to prevent it? How long ago do you go back in that case? And how do you come out of it??
Anyway, let's move onto something happier.
Yesterday, I went to see Grayson Perry's tapestries in Victoria Miro, which he explored with the channel 4 documentary series. The artist was the motivation that I started ceramics and his pots have been always inspiration for the fact that something can be more than something.
And happy coincidence! The gallery was having another show at the same time: the installation by Sarah Sze. I love her work, the delicacy of it, the colour and all the little things she makes. It reminds me that the universe is interconnecting in a very fragile balance.
...And I felt OK.

collect 2012
After so many unpleasant days, finally, it looks like we can enjoy the sun!? We went to Hampstead Heath which is my favourite park on a sunny day. To show it to our friend who'd never been there we walked in the park from south west end to Kenwood House and then down to Parliament Hill. It was a good walk. I had muscle pain on the next day. The park was very beautiful with young leaves and Azaleas. In Japan we eat buds from wild trees and wild grasses (of course the ones that tastes lovely) and I realised I have the Japanese tendency to look for it when looking greens.
I love finding beautiful little streets.

tenugui
I just came back from Soho. My tutor kindly invited me to dinner at Koya which is a lovely Udon noodle restaurant on Frith street. I loved it! The quality of the noodle is superb. I would recommend it to anybody who hasn't tried them.
Today I'll start a new series of posts about Japanese kitchen tools. There are a few items that I brought from Japan as they are necessary for my cooking. They are something I can't find their alternatives here or something I can't feel comfortable using the same/similar thing here.
Tenugui is a hand towel or big handkerchief made from cotton. There were more other ways to use it in old days but I use it mainly in kitchen as a tea towel, a sieve, a salad dryer and so on. It is very handy as being easy to keep it clean for its large mesh and no stitch. It is also enjoyable to use them as there are so many designs.

ceramic art london 2012
It is nice always when I feel spring. When I see more squirrels, tiny leaves in a tree and spring flowers.
It was a beautiful day today. I started off with yoga session and then went to a bike shop to pick up my mine. It needed a lot of TLC and came back with a new basket in front. Now I can carry more food!
Then I went to see Ceramic Art London. My new discovery was Stephanie Quayle. Her animal sculpture is like 3D drawing with strong brush strokes. So confident with clay. I really admire her work.
Although, my favourite in the show was Susan O'Byrne still. She has more of small sculptures this year and more patterns on the surface, which made her sculpture more attractive. I wish I could have one of her work someday...
It was a really inspiring and encouraging show as I also met some people I know (not only in exhibitors but in visitors as well) and had a lovely chat.
I really hope something comes out from what I've been experimenting in the studio!

a little break
I was nearly finishing Christmas orders before the Open Studio... but the last firing was a total disaster.
It was the worst firing I ever had in my ceramics career! One of the clay I mixed into the original was unknown but I was assuming it would be OK. I have a few bags of clay I got from my friends who are ceramicists and sculptors. The unknown clay was one of those and it caused bubbles and cracks in the body after high temperature firing and it looks really ugly.
This is when you think "Enough!" with ceramics. There are so many happenings in the firing even though you spend so much time constructing it. Well, in this case I shouldn't have used the funny clay but even though you know what you're using there are so many faults that stay mysterious forever.
Anyway what I did was to eat a bar of chocolate to calm down myself and apologise to those who are expecting their orders. Then I started making another batch and hopefully I will get them done very soon...!
By the way the cup in the picture is my best favourite I got at Matsumoto (Please check my old post.) It is thrown in porcelain and curved with sculpting knife. It is a very common decorating technique called 'shinogi' in Japan but her pattern is done really really beautifully and I can't help admiring it.

back in London looking back...
I came back in London yesterday.
I felt really relieved to be away from the heat and humidity in Japan, (It was 35℃ when I left there!) but I was missing all those nice things already...

Yuka terraces sticking out on the river is the scene of Kyoto in summer.
When I wasn't updating the blog, I was travelling in Osaka and Kyoto for a week. Kyoto has a lot of histories and beauties compacted in a small area, which is so hard to find anywhere else. It is the city I always go back when being in Japan as it has a lot of histories and ceramic shops for me too.
Funny enough when I was living in Kyoto I didn't see much of these precious historical things, but I appreciate them a lot now. This time I did get to see the place I'd been wanting to go for a long time: Katsura imperial village.
This is a view from one of the four tea houses in the village. These houses were designed to see the moon and you can guess how much they enjoyed the beautiful views from these houses.
They use precious materials but not obvious way. That is 'cool' in Japan always.
Although it's not only the gold leaf that is precious in this case but also the velvet that is making check pattern on the wall under the window.
The gold has been a symbol of power and wealth in a lot of cultures. And we also have golden temples and had a golden tea house made by powerful people of the time. However, they are very rare examples of having it so front.
I still have some pictures taken in Japan. I will show them when possible.
